Join the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) as our new Public Information Officer! We are seeking a dynamic, motivated, and innovative individual to assist in the creation and dissemination of agency communications, in agency public relations, and in information gathering ,and analysis for the agency. You will report to the Strategic Communications Director and work closely with USBE’s administrative team.

Principal Duties

  • Create and disseminate information that represents the Board’s view and Board actions as they impact other agencies and Utah education partners.
  • Develop a working relationship with reporters, PIOs at the school district and charter school level, and other education partners and stakeholders to establish and maintain an effective communication loop.
  • Provide media interviews and media statements in response to requests from reporters and news outlets.
  • Draft talking points, issue briefs, opinion editorials, newsletters, and other communications materials for USBE.
  • Assist in the creation and dissemination of internal communications, including the agency’s weekly newsletter, as well as outward-facing content, such as one-pagers, public statements, and social media posts. Here, some basic design and video editing experience is preferred.
  • Identify opportunities for USBE and its staff to be represented in key media channels.
  • Attend Board meetings and other relevant community meetings, including monthly USPRA meetings with district PIOs to maintain external and organizational awareness.
  • Draft and distribute Board meeting summaries after each monthly Board meeting.
  • Provide communications counsel and guidance to USBE and its staff.

Ideal Candidate

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, or communications is preferred, but bachelor’s degrees in public policy, political science, or related fields will be considered.
  • A minimum of three years experience in communications, public policy, government relations, or a related field.
  • Experience working with the media, including providing telephone and on-camera interviews with journalists and reporters.
  • Experience managing and creating social media content.
  • Basic design and video editing skills.
  • Commitment to the mission of the Utah State Board of Education to create equitable conditions for student success.

  • Creative and effective communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across numerous media and platforms.
  • Exceptional writing ability.
  • The ability to exhibit confidence and professional diplomacy, while effectively relating to people at all levels internally and externally.
  • Knowledge of the full range of media platforms, with demonstrated success generating both online and traditional media awareness among key influencers such as bloggers, industry experts and news reporters.
  • A proven track record of responding effectively and strategically to high-profile media inquiries.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, lead projects, meet multiple concurrent deadlines, organize time and priorities, and work well as a member of a team.
  • An exceptionally high level of integrity, trust, accountability, and superior judgment to meet the needs of the Board and Superintendent's Executive Leadership Team. Mature, professional demeanor and a commitment to continued professional growth.
