The New Mexico State Police Intelligence Unit exist to provide investigative and analytical expertise by working criminal investigations with investigators and officers of all divisions within New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS) / New Mexico State Police (NMSP), as well as other local, state, and federal enforcement agencies to aid in the identification, arrest, prosecution, and conviction of criminal suspects.
Why does the job exist?

Provide investigative and intelligence expertise by working complex criminal investigations with other investigators and Officers of all divisions within the Department of Safety (OPS) and NM State Police (NMSP), as well as other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to aid in the identification, arrest, prosecution, and conviction of criminal suspects. Provides criminal intelligence in the areas of gun crimes, narcotics, and criminal organizations. Also assist other sections of the NMSP Intelligence Unit, including Criminal Intelligence, as well as data analysis.
How does it get done?

Coordinates and conducts tactical analysis of complex criminal/financial cases by collecting, organizing, and analyzing large amounts of diverse information to identify the critical elements of a case. Uses databases and other sources to identify and locate people involved with criminal activity, finding connections, and developing leads. Creates documents for wanted suspects, crime trends, officer safety, and investigative findings. Finds connections, develops leads and intelligence in criminal investigations based on database searches, internet research, information provided by various agencies, and review of case files. Conducts threat assessments of individuals and events. Creates, prepares, and determines relevancy of various law enforcement intelligence documents pertaining to wanted suspects, crime trends, and officer safety for dissemination. Maintains confidentiality of law enforcement sensitive documents and confidential sources and adheres to policy and procedures set forth by local, state, and federal governing agencies.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education.
Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.

In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting within a law enforcement environment, where exposure to confidential and disturbing information is common, extensive computer usage is required, and high-volume caseloads are expected. Incumbent must be comfortable with a high stress environment and will be required to work in close proximity with commissioned law enforcement officers who carry weapons. Occasional travel within the state will be required to support various criminal investigations and training. Incumbent is required to be on call during off-duty time and is required to answer a department-issued cell phone and provide assistance after hours and on weekends during the time they are scheduled to be on call. Ability to maintain adherence to strict confidentiality. Working Conditions for individual positions in this classification will vary based on each agency's utilization, essential functions, and the recruitment needs at the time a vacancy is posted.
