Since 1893, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. JOB SUMMARY
The Manager of Public Safety leads and coordinates assigned operational activities for the Public Safety Department. This position focuses on public safety and security core initiatives and operational capabilities that include: security operations and the protection of organizational assets, team development, shift scheduling, engagement and communications, service excellence with customers and other external partners, continuous improvement, and regulatory compliance. This position requires specialized skills, knowledge and the subject matter expertise related to safety programs, public safety, security and criminal procedure and emergency preparedness.
Education
Associate’s Degree in related field or related experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Experience

Three (3) years of general experience in related fields
- Two (2) years of leadership experience

Five (5) years of experience in hospital public safety or law enforcement preferred.
License and Certification:
- Valid driver’s license

Connecticut Guard Card
-
Industry related certifications from International Association for Heathcare Security and Safety (IAHSS), ASIS or International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) preferred

IAHSS – Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) preferred

ASIS – Certified Protection Professional (CPP) preferred

Capability to independently analyze and solve a variety of difficult situations, problem events, emergencies.

Exceptional attention to detail and ability to handle tasks independently.

Strong skills in Microsoft Office, general technology and electronic tools and resources.

Knowledge of regulations or laws such as CMS, Joint Commission, OSHA, NFPA, CT Penal Code, among others.

Knowledge of safety programs and security-related systems, emergency preparedness functions, standards and vulnerabilities.

Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends during an emergency or disaster.
