Public Safety Officer

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties described below are indicative of what the Public Safety Officer might be asked to perform. Other duties may be assigned. This job description is to incorporate any municipal ordinances created for the position of Public Safety Officer.

Essential Functions:

  • Patrols streets, roads, alleys and highways to detect and prevent violations of motor vehicle or criminal laws.
  • Directs traffic in congested or emergency areas.
  • Assists the general public as much as possible and practical in a variety of problems or circumstances.
  • Arrests traffic violators and those committing a felony or misdemeanor, advising the person of his/her rights and processing the individual through appropriate channels.
  • May perform investigative, undercover intelligence work in a variety of vice operations such as narcotics, internal affairs, frauds and related areas.
  • May perform community relations work.
  • Notes and investigates suspicious persons and establishments, reporting them to superior officers.
  • Reports to scene of accidents and renders first aid to injured to the extent of their ability.
  • Investigates causes and results of accidents.
  • Submits daily activity reports reviewing with superior officers.
  • May collect, analyze, systematize and validate detailed evidence found in cases such as homicides, burglaries, suicides, sex related crimes, recovered stolen vehicles, arson, fatal accidents, etc.
  • Diagrams details of accident scenes (position of parties and vehicles, terrain, roadway, skid marks, point of impact, etc.), or in case of homicide sketches position of the body and original location of all collected evidence.
  • Writes traffic accident reports indicating as much evidence and detailed information as possible in reference to the cause and the damages for use in court and other legal processes.
  • May assist in special assignments such as temporary exchanges of officers, surveillance efforts or public relations Projects.
  • Performs investigative functions dealing with juvenile delinquency.
  • Performs investigations of reported law violations and obtains statements from witnesses, complaints and suspected criminals.
  • Transports prisoners to the County Jail facility.
  • Inspects buildings to make sure they are secure and unauthorized activities/people are not on premises.
  • Controls public gatherings.
  • Serves criminal processes and warrants.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Provides public safety support at education and community events, such as sporting events, funeral escorts, traffic control, events, and festivals.
  • Responds to fire alarms, enters buildings appropriate fire fighting equipment.
  • Ventilates burning buildings.
  • Responds to structural and other major fires, including vehicle accidents and Hazmat emergencies.
  • Performs technical rescue activities including HazMat, rope rescues, water rescues, trench collapse, confined space, building collapse, and vehicle extrications.
  • Responds as First Responder to medical emergencies assisting ambulance personnel with patient care.
  • Removes personnel from danger and gives first aid to injured person to the extent of their ability.
  • Performs salvage operations.
  • May participate in the inspection and prevention work looking for fire hazards and security deficiencies, noting location of sprinkling systems, sources of emergency water supply, contents and general layout of building.
  • Participates in fire fighting and police training sessions to gain and increase knowledge and skill in work and may supervise fire drills at schools and churches.
  • Responds to public safety hazards (i.e. downed power lines, traffic hazards, hazardous material spills, etc.)
  • Cleans and maintains assigned patrol vehicle.
  • Responds to various wild and domesticated animal calls in the absence of an Animal Control Officer.
  • May perform death notifications.
  • Performs interrogation of criminal suspects.
  • Responds to and investigates civil and domestic issues.
  • Performs computer data entry of citations and reports.
  • Delivers City mail, council packets, City Summons and criminal report to the prosecuting Attorney.
  • Performs bi-weekly test of emergency sirens.
  • May perform water rescue.

Marginal Functions:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Material and equipment used:

  • Personal computer, word processing, spreadsheet, database software, laser printer, calculator, telephone, copy machine, fax machine, typewriter.
  • Ax and sledge hammer, booster lines, breathalyzer, car, fire fighting water hose, fire truck, hand cuffs/restraints, hand fire extinguishers, hose nozzles, jaws of life, ladder truck, ladders, LiveScan machine, motor cycle, pepper spray, pumper, radio, safety equipment, SUV/Truck, taser, tear gas, weapons (pistol/shotgun), other police and fire apparatus equipment.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required at the time of hire or for continuation of employment.

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Two years related experience and/or Associate’s degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Significant training in police work.
  • Successful completion of a drug screening test (subject to random drug screenings).
  • Must have an excellent work history and attendance record.
  • Excellent driving record.

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Three years related experience and/or Associate’s degree and one year experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year experience in law enforcement and fire protection preferred

Certifications, Licenses, and Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Missouri Police Officer Certification.
  • Fire Arms Certification.
  • Breathalyzer Certification.
  • LiveScan Certification.
  • Fire Fighting Training.
  • Operations Certification.
  • CPR Certification.
  • EMT Certification desired

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to analyze situations and people effectively.
  • Ability to apply police and fire fighting principles, practices and procedures with sound judgments in emergency situations.
  • Ability to comprehend and accurately follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn technical aspects of fire fighting and police work.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • General knowledge of computer software to include Microsoft Word, Excel and Works.
  • Good knowledge of the safe operations of a motor vehicle.
  • Physically able to fully perform assigned duties.
  • Working knowledge of defensive tactics.

Working knowledge of law enforcement and fire protection functions and purposes.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $44,948.80 per year
