The Buncombe County Public Safety Training Center is a dynamic state-of-the-art facility that provides training for all first responder disciplines in Buncombe County as well as agencies throughout Western North Carolina. This includes but is not limited to: Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement, Urban Search and Rescue, and Emergency Management, as well as multiple state and federal agencies. The Public Safety Training center is a division of Buncombe County Emergency Services.
Purpose of the position:
The purpose of this position is to perform technical work at the Public Safety Training Facility for Buncombe County.
Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): High school diploma or GED, and a minimum of two (2) years progressively increasing experience in EMS, Fire, Emergency Management or Law Enforcement; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Training and Experience: Possession of one or more of the following certificates issued by the State of North Carolina: Fire Instructor, Law Enforcement Instructor, EMS Instructor, or Emergency Management Instructor preferred.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Essential Functions of the position:
  • Participate in supporting new and existing training programs.
  • Ensure that the facility remains in compliance with environmental and safety regulations per NC DEHNR, OSHA, EPA etc. Assist in regulatory audits and in any necessary corrective actions.
  • Assist in the preventative maintenance of equipment to include checking the status and condition of equipment.
  • Assists in preparing reports and maintaining a variety of records.
  • Repair, replace, and adjust equipment and components to include rotating, aligning, and charging and discharging equipment.
  • Perform maintenance and cleaning work for the upkeep of the apparatus, equipment, buildings and grounds.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • General knowledge of all local, state, and federal certification requirements for public safety programs.
  • General knowledge of firefighting procedures, techniques, and apparatus.
  • General knowledge of emergency medical procedures and techniques
  • Skill in the use of computers and commitment to use of technology
  • Ability to interpret and carry out instructions and assignments.
  • Ability to enforce safety rules, regulations, and policies firmly, objectively, and tactfully.
  • Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
