Responsibilities


The Florida State University College of Law is seeking a Public Service Assistant to help maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position is essential to ensuring the safety and security of campus facilities. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Access Control & Surveillance

  • Active monitoring of entrances, exits, parking lots, and common areas.
  • Routine patrols of assigned buildings, including after-hours checks.
  • Prompt response to alarms, incidents, and emergencies in accordance with established procedures.
  • Enforcing access control and building security protocols.
  • Identifying and reporting safety hazards.
  • Maintaining a professional and approachable presence to promote a secure and welcoming environment.

Incident Reporting and Safety Oversight

  • Promptly document and report security incidents, safety hazards, and maintenance issues to the appropriate supervisor and through designated campus reporting channels.
  • Assist in identifying and addressing potential safety risks to help maintain a secure and safe environment for all building occupants and visitors of the law school.

Emergency Response and Preparedness

  • Respond promptly and professionally to security incidents, emergencies, alarms, and reports of suspicious activity.
  • Participate in safety drills, training sessions, and emergency preparedness exercises as required to maintain readiness.
  • Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, coordinate with campus police, facilities staff, and emergency services during critical incidents or building evacuations.
  • Assist with continuity of operations planning and implementation to support the law school’s ability to maintain essential functions during and after emergencies.
  • May provide basic first aid help during emergencies until medical professionals arrive.

Policy Enforcement and Community Engagement

  • Assists in enforcing campus and law school policies, building regulations, and safety protocols to support a secure and orderly environment.
  • May contribute to student, faculty, and staff orientations by preparing and/or delivering presentations that highlight available services and outline key safety procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and visitors to provide guidance, share safety information, and address concerns or questions.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications


A high school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established security protocols.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
