Purchasing Manager for highly diverse Custom Steel Fabricator
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
Acquire, purchase and negotiate materials, equipment and supplies at a competitive price, on time and under budget to ensure Operations has all items required to meet deadlines and operate efficiently. Provide accurate and timely pricing information to Estimating Department. Actively investigate and document cost variance issues with Finance Department to ensure variances are understood and steps are taken to prevent recurrence of errors. Represents the Company in a professional manner, treating all suppliers fairly and equally.
- Compares and negotiates costs to insure best possible value and satisfaction of required delivery timing
- Negotiate all purchases within budget constraints
- Manage highly dynamic and diverse backlog for production and update management on issues
- Prepare purchase orders and create requisitions for goods and services
- Research and evaluate suppliers based on price, quality, selection, service, support, availability, reliability, production and distribution capabilities, and the supplier's reputation and history
- Quickly gains technical knowledge on wide variety of materials needed by operations (paint, carbon steel, aluminum, pipe, valves, fittings etc) to serve as a resource to both estimating and operations
- Maintain and review computerized records of items purchased, costs, deliveries, product performance, and inventories
- Monitor shipments to ensure that goods come in on time and resolve problems related to undelivered goods or quality issues
- Monitor changes affecting supply and demand, tracking market conditions, price trends, or futures market
- Use inventory management tools to evaluate, maintain and forecast inventory requirements
- Create and or improve purchasing department procedures consistent with API, AISC, ASME and ISO quality certifications
General requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred, but extensive purchasing experience would be acceptable in lieu of
- Applicant must be very proficient with Microsoft Office Applications, in particular Excel
- Steel purchasing experience highly preferred as well as experience operating within a highly detailed Quality Management System such as API, AISC, AMSE and ISO
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Ability to analyze and make competent decisions independently
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Computer proficiency, including operating with speed and accuracy with the ability to utilize reports to extract accurate data
- Knowledge of computer based purchasing systems is preferred
- Must be able to multi task and work in a fast paced environment
