The Job

Purchasing Manager – Des Moines Golf & Country Club

Des Moines Golf & Country Club, a historic and family-focused private club located in West Des Moines, Iowa, is searching for our next Purchasing Manager (PM). The PM is responsible for the organization and management of the food, beverage, and supplies in the storerooms and clubhouse. This includes the stocking, pricing, weighing, quality control, and internal distribution of all items purchased. Further tasks include ensuring the Club is getting the best pricing possible while ensuring month-end inventories are conducted accurately and in a timely manner.

The Club

Founded in 1897, DMGCC has a rich tradition, an active calendar and membership, a very strong financial position, and a very bright future. Located in the affluent suburb of West Des Moines, the club features two 18-hole, Pete Dye-designed courses and over 1500 member families with a multi-year waitlist for golf memberships. The club has hosted the 1999 U.S. Senior Open and the 2017 Solheim Cup.

Other amenities include an Olympic-sized swimming pool and aquatic center and an active racquets program with tennis and pickleball courts.

The Duties

  • Monitors stock levels of all products to ensure that sufficient inventory is available for all departments.
  • Prepares purchase orders for required merchandise, assuring that Club needs match Club activities while also receiving the best value for the Club.
  • Develops and maintains a par stock system to always ensure proper inventory levels.
  • Receives, checks, weighs, and prices all merchandise to ensure proper quality, and that accountability is maintained.
  • Receives, and fills requisitions for food products and supplies as needed by Club personnel, ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to storeroom areas.
  • Responsible for the sanitation and cleanliness of the storeroom, coolers, freezer, and receiving area.
  • Maintains proper rotation so that FIFO guidelines are followed.
  • Takes an end of the month inventory, accurately pricing and forwarding the information to the Club Controller within five working days after the physical counts.
  • Places and receives all orders for the Clubhouse, promptly distributing or notifying departments of items received.
  • Reviews all daily invoices for accuracy and forwards them to the account payable office within twenty-four hours.
  • Responsible for the timely receipt of all competitive bids for evaluation.
  • Responsible for the timely stocking of all food and beverage satellite areas to include course stands, tennis shop, bar carts, etc.
  • Supports the culinary team by assisting with the preparation of food when necessary.
  • Other such duties as assigned.

The Qualifications

  • Must have culinary experience in some capacity, 2-3 year’s experience preferred.
  • Must have excellent Microsoft and computer skills, specifically Excel and Word capabilities.
  • Must be certified in food safety with a willingness to enforce such standards.
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Is organized as well as flexible.
  • Has a very strong track record of proactively managing food costs, inventory, waste, etc.
  • Exhibits a positive disposition along with a sense of humor.
  • Embodies the club’s core values while being a strong team player.

Work Environment

  • Will be required to work in different temperatures, spending time both inside of walk-ins and outside in the open air. Must be able to lift 50lbs. while sitting and standing for long periods of time.
  • This is typically an early-morning position where flexibility to be available later and on weekends is required.
  • The use of a golf cart is required in taking product from one part of the Club to another.
