Quality Assurance Specialist (Software Development Specialist 2)

What You Will Do

The Quality Assurance Specialist supports the Software Testing and Requirement Services section by ensuring the reliability and accuracy of critical internal and external facing systems. This role is central to a fast‑paced modernization efforts. The team operates in a collaborative, mission‑driven environment focused on system stability, customer service, and seamless transition from legacy platforms.

The QA Specialist plays an important role in designing and executing manual and automated tests, validating requirements, identifying defects, and ensuring overall software quality. This position contributes to comprehensive testing across sprint cycles, interfaces, data conversion, accessibility, and end‑to‑end processes, while also supporting legacy system stability during transition work. The role helps ensure reliable technology delivery, smooth user experiences, and continuity of essential public services.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure applications meet requirements and function as expected
  • Work with business teams to define and approve requirements and assess impacts and dependencies
  • Create detailed test plans and map requirements to test scenarios for full traceability
  • Design and execute manual and automated tests, including system, regression, performance, and load testing
  • Prepare test scripts and test data
  • Execute tests to identify defects and manage them through the full defect lifecycle to resolution
  • Provide user acceptance testing (UAT) support, including answering questions and assisting with test planning and execution
  • Participate in certifying software for deployment and support deployment activities
  • Track testing results, create testing metrics, and document outcomes clearly
  • Assist with user guides, training materials, and technical documentation
  • Identify repetitive test scenarios for automation opportunities

Schedule: Full-time

Hours: Standard workdays are Monday through Friday. Hours are between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Location: This position will be headquartered in an ODJFS Facility in one of the following cities - Columbus, Akron, or Dayton. This determination will take into account the proximity to the applicant's home address.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate, at minimum, must have the following:

Option 1:

  • 48 months work experience in any combination of the following: designing and performing systems analysis, developing and/or modifying programs for computer applications recommending application solutions and/or testing and correcting programs as it relates to testing and implementation and assisting with documentation
  • 12 months work experience in Software Testing/Quality Assurance tools (e.g., Load Runner, Selenium, DevOps, JMeter, etc.)

Option 2:

  • 30 months work experience in any combination of the following: designing and performing systems analysis, developing and/or modifying programs for computer applications recommending application solutions and/or testing and correcting programs as it relates to testing and implementation and assisting with documentation
  • 12 months work experience in Software Testing/Quality Assurance tools (e.g., Load Runner, Selenium, DevOps, JMeter, etc.)
  • Completion of Associate's core program in Computer Science or Information Systems

Option 3:

  • 24 months work experience in any combination of the following: designing and performing systems analysis, developing and/or modifying programs for computer applications recommending application solutions and/or testing and correcting programs as it relates to testing and implementation and assisting with documentation
  • 12 months work experience in Software Testing/Quality Assurance tools (e.g., Load Runner, Selenium, DevOps, JMeter, etc.)
  • Completion of undergraduate core program in Computer Science or Information Systems

Option 4:

  • Equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.

Pay Information

This position is in the State of Ohio’s OCSEA Pay Schedule, Pay Range 34. Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be the minimum salary of that pay range (step 1, currently $36.90 per hour). These ranges provide a standardized pathway for pay increases. With continued employment, new hires move to the next step in the range after 6 months and annually thereafter. Cost of Living Adjustments increase wages in these ranges each fiscal year. The current step progression wages are in the table below.
