Quality Engineer

Industry: Machine Shop – VMC / HMC / Heat Exchanger Tubesheets

1. Incoming Material Inspection

• Verify raw material certificates (MTC / PMI) as per drawings & codes (ASME, ASTM).
• Conduct chemical & mechanical property verification.
• Perform visual inspection for surface defects, lamination, rust, and damage.
• Ensure material traceability & heat number control.

2. In-Process Inspection (VMC / HMC Operations)

• Inspect machining operations on:
• Heat Exchanger Tubesheets
• Baffles, flanges, covers, channel heads
• Verify:
• Dimensions as per approved drawings
• Hole diameter, pitch, perpendicularity
• Flatness, parallelism, concentricity
• Monitor:
• First Article Inspection (FAI)
• Tool offsets & machining parameters
• Ensure proper clamping & setup verification.

3. Tubesheet Specific Quality Control

• Check:
• Tube hole drilling & reaming accuracy
• Ligament thickness
• Hole orientation & pattern alignment
• Inspect:
• Surface finish (Ra value)
• Burr-free holes & chamfers
• Ensure compliance with:
• TEMA / ASME Section VIII
• Customer specifications

4. Dimensional & Measurement Control

• Use & maintain:
• Vernier calipers, micrometers, bore gauges
• Dial indicators, height gauges
• CMM (if applicable)
• Ensure calibration validity of measuring instruments.
• Prepare inspection reports & dimensional records.

5. Final Inspection & Documentation

• Perform final dimensional inspection before dispatch.
• Review:
• Drawings, QAP, ITP
• Customer & code requirements
• Prepare:
• Final Inspection Report (FIR)
• Dimensional Inspection Reports (DIR)
• Release notes for dispatch

6. Non-Conformance & Corrective Actions

• Identify non-conformities (NC) during inspection.
• Raise NCRs and coordinate corrective / preventive actions.
• Analyze root causes and suggest process improvements.
• Verify rework / repair acceptance.

7. Code, Standard & Customer Compliance

• Ensure compliance with:
• ASME Sec VIII, TEMA, ISO 9001
• Customer quality requirements
• Support:
• Customer inspections & third-party inspections (TPI).
• Assist during internal & external audits.

8. Process Improvement & Quality Control

• Participate in:
• Process capability studies
• Continuous improvement initiatives
• Suggest improvements to reduce:
• Rejection
• Rework
• Machining errors

9. Safety & Housekeeping

• Ensure safe machining practices.
• Follow 5S & shop floor discipline.
• Maintain cleanliness of inspection area.
