Job summary

The Quality Inspector is responsible for conducting inspections and testing throughout the food manufacturing process. They ensure all food products meet internal quality specifications and external food safety standards. The inspector's work helps protect consumers from foodborne illnesses, maintains brand reputation, and prevents costly recalls.

Key responsibilities

  • Raw materials inspection: Inspect and test incoming ingredients and packaging materials to ensure they meet quality and safety standards before entering the production line.
  • In-process monitoring: Conduct checks during various stages of production to ensure manufacturing processes comply with established hygiene and quality protocols, such as Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Finished product inspection: Perform final checks on products for attributes like appearance, color, taste, texture, and smell, as well as confirm correct labeling and packaging.
  • Testing and analysis: Collect and submit food samples for laboratory analysis, including microbiological, chemical, and physical testing, to verify they meet quality and safety specifications.
  • Documentation and reporting: Accurately complete and maintain all required quality control logs, inspection forms, and reports. Document any non-conformance issues or product defects.
  • Issue resolution: Report any defects or problems to the quality assurance and production managers. Assist in investigating the root cause of quality lapses and implementing corrective and preventative actions.
  • Facility and sanitation audits: Conduct regular audits of the production plant and equipment to ensure they meet hygiene and sanitation standards.
  • Staff training: Assist in training production staff on food safety, hygiene practices, and quality control procedures.
  • Regulatory compliance: Stay up-to-date on all relevant local, state, and federal food safety laws and regulations to ensure the company remains in compliance.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Attention to detail: A meticulous and thorough approach to identifying even minor deviations from quality standards.
  • Technical knowledge: A strong understanding of food safety regulations, including HACCP and GMP principles.
  • Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to report findings clearly to both management and production staff.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills: The ability to analyze data from inspections and testing to help identify the root cause of issues and propose solutions.
  • Physical stamina: The ability to stand for long periods and, in some cases, lift or move materials.
  • Relevant experience: Previous experience in a quality control or assurance role, preferably within a food manufacturing or processing environment.
  • Education: Bachelor's certificate in Food Science, Biology, or a related field may be preferred for some positions.
  • Certifications: Professional certifications such as HACCP are often beneficial.
