The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 2 to join the Northwest Region (NWR) Snohomish/King Construction team. This role supports the organization’s mission by ensuring highway projects are built in compliance with contract documents and mandatory standards. This is accomplished by inspecting contract work, keeping accurate, complete, and detailed field records, ensuring that environmental regulations are being adhered to in a safe manner.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Quality Verification Inspector will:

Verify compliance with the Request for Proposal, Released for Construction plans and specifications, environmental permits, commitments, and other contract documents.

Verify compliance with Plans, Specifications, and Estimates, permits and commitments; verify bid quantities and document any changes.

Monitor construction schedules, delays, and potential change order issues.

Coordinate with WSDOT Environmental Compliance Inspector on Contractor’s permit related activities.

Perform quality verification audits of construction activities, material requirements, design plans, project submittals, and other contract requirements.

Determine quality verification needs and upload audit information and documents into the Construction Audit Tracking System (CATS).

Use the WSDOT Construction manual to verify sampling and testing procedures.
Qualifications
This is a Transportation Engineer 2 position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level in the classification series based on candidate qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 1 level, the following competencies are required:

Engineering Fundamentals: Foundational knowledge of basic engineering and mathematical principles to solve routine engineering problems, typically gained through education, experience, training, or certification (EIT). Ability to apply this knowledge to design, construction, and inspection tasks.
To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 2 level, the following competencies are required:

Foundational Engineering Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of civil, structural, geotechnical, or transportation engineering principles (e.g., structural, geotechnical, construction management, traffic, bridge, or similarly related engineering experience including but not limited to inspection and/or testing of hot mix asphalt paving, concrete placement, placement of embankment, and bridge construction/rehabilitation).
In addition to the above, the following are required at either level:

Licensure: A valid driver’s license, with the ability to safely travel to and from job sites.

Physical Capability: Ability to manipulate and transport up to 40 lbs.

Computer and Technology Proficiency: Knowledge of computer technology and the ability to use software systems to support documentation, reporting and communication

Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.

Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

Engineering Certification: Certification as an EIT.

Engineering Licensure: Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Washington State.
-
Construction Inspection: Experience as a construction inspector working on major highways with complex traffic control setups.
-
Construction and Materials Oversight: Experience inspecting drainage, hot mix asphalt, bridge construction and/or rehabilitation, and concrete placement.

Leadership Experience: Experience mentoring and directing the duties of coworkers (direct reports and/or interns).

The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.

This is a Transportation Engineer 2 position. Transportation Engineer 1: $68,014 – $91,400

Transportation Engineer 2: $75,045 – $100,951
