Junior Accountant / Bookkeeper
Job Overview
Goldman Haque is a forward-thinking CPA firm based in Pelham, NY, with a strong concentration of clients across New York and Connecticut. We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated professional to join our team in a combined Bookkeeping & Sales Tax role. This role reports directly to a Tax Accountant and is ideal for an individual with hands-on experience across both functions who wants to grow their skills in payroll and broader tax compliance. The successful candidate will have strong organizational skills and a passion for helping clients achieve their financial goals.
Duties
1) Bookkeeping
- Record and maintain accurate financial transactions of our clients in QuickBooks
- Process client bank statements into Excel templates or QuickBooks Online; apply initial general ledger coding and flag unusual items
- Reconcile bank statements, credit card accounts, and general ledger accounts
- Support the firm's ongoing migration of legacy Excel-based clients onto QuickBooks Online (chart of accounts setup, opening balances, bank feeds).
- Maintain organized work papers in the firm's cloud file system; produce monthly or quarterly trial balance packages
- Generate financial reports such as income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements for clients.
- Collaborate with the Tax Accountant to prepare income tax returns and related documentation.
- Address client inquiries and resolve discrepancies; maintain confidentiality and ensure secure handling of sensitive financial and client data.
2) Sales Tax
- Prepare and file monthly NY and CT sales tax returns
- Reconcile POS daily reports, sales registers (Z-tapes), and bank deposits — including reconstruction when monthly POS reports are incomplete.
- Categorize sales by location: fuel by grade, food, and retail products
- Maintain monthly data-collection templates for clients; coordinate with operations managers and store-level staff to gather supplier invoices and POS exports
- Manage filing calendars, exemption certificates, and state notice responses
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local sales and use tax regulations.
Skills
- Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks Online preferred) and payroll systems.
- Basic understanding of federal and state tax regulations, especially for small businesses and payroll compliance.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel (pivot tables, lookups), for financial analysis and reporting.
- Strong organizational skills with a keen eye for accuracy and detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills for working with clients and team members.
- Willingness to learn and grow in tax preparation and compliance.
- Primarily in-office at our Pelham, NY headquarters; hybrid flexibility considered after onboarding. Standard business hours year-round, with some potential extended hours during tax season (February through April).
