Job Summary/Basic Function
Students will assist in the Psychology Department Rat Lab with animal husbandry and research. Students will also train new students and may supervise newer research assistants and/or students who are enrolled in relevant classes.

Required Qualifications
  • Enrolled at Millersville University (graduate or undergraduate)
  • Ability to handle and treat rats humanely and in accordance with current IACUC protocols.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions, work independently, communicate clearly, and train/supervise other students.
  • CITI ethics training will be required upon hiring.
  • Successful interview.
  • Approval of Psychology Rat Lab Director/Instructor

Preferred Qualifications
  • Enrolled as Psychology major (undergraduate) or in one of the Psychology Department graduate programs [primary].
  • Enrolled as Biology major (undergraduate) [secondary].
  • Undergraduates: Completed 30 or more credit hours of university courses.
  • Completed one or more classes in research methods and/or statistics.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

Job Duties
Job duties will include some or all of the following:
  • Handling animals (rats)
  • Administering food and water
  • Conducting experimental procedures/running experimental sessions
  • Prepare/handle/administer non-controlled substances
  • Performing i.p./s.c. injections
  • Supervision of other RAs and/or students enrolled in relevant courses
  • Basic facility maintenance (e.g., cleaning animal cages, maintaining cleanliness of experimental equipment and space)
  • Other related duties as needed

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Students will be working in a rat lab in Susan P. Luek Hall.
Must have enough physical mobility to stand, walk, reach above head, and bend down.
Must be able to lift 25–40 lbs. to waist (not above head).

For applicants who are not enrolled as students in the Psychology Department, a letter of recommendation from a Millersville faculty member is required. The faculty member should (a) be familiar with your academic performance and/or (b) have served as your supervisor in an alternative setting (e.g., laboratory, field placement, tutoring center). The letter should address your time management skills (e.g., attendance, promptness), diligence (e.g., completing assignments/duties regularly and on time), communication skills, ability to work well with others, and laboratory skills (if relevant).
