Reading Tutor (Afternoon) – Part-time

About Us:

Founded in 2001 and located in Harlem, Reading Team, Inc. is a dedicated organization that provides evidence-based literacy programs to children in Pre-K through 5th grades in New York City.

At the Reading Team, we prioritize the academic growth of our children. With our comprehensive approach, each child receives 90+ minutes of engaging, on-task activities, five days a week. Our programs are thoughtfully designed to focus on essential early literacy components such as phonics, explicit comprehension strategies, oral and written expression, and analytical skills.

Over the course of our existence, we have proudly fostered substantial literacy growth and academic achievements for over 10,000 children hailing from economically challenged backgrounds and underserved neighborhoods. We firmly believe that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, and we aim to inspire more children to develop a lifelong love for reading, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in their educational journeys and beyond.

Compensation: $20/hr.

Role Overview and Responsibilities:

In-person. No remote.

Start Date: March 2026

You will serve as a member of a 6-person team. As a Reading Tutor, you will provide direct literacy interventions to K-5 students, individually or in small groups, at our Bronx site on 1598 Townsend Avenue, Wednesday-Friday, 2:15-5:15 p.m.

Key Responsibilities:

• Implement prepared lessons using provided curriculum and lesson materials.
• Assist students with homework completion.
• Maintain an orderly classroom that promotes healthy learning practices.
• Serve snacks to children and clean up preparation and eating areas afterwards.
• Ensure student safety and supervision at all times.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework preferred.
• At least 1 year of experience tutoring, mentoring, or working with children in an educational or youth program setting is preferred.
• Experience with a structured literacy program such as Reading Ready or Reading Go is a plus but not required.
• Demonstrated ability to manage groups of young children using appropriate classroom management techniques.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Familiarity with iPad and other digital teaching tools.
• Strong work ethic and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently.
• All program staff must be vaccinated; Students and teachers currently have the option of wearing a mask during program sessions.
