Registered Nurse - Head Nurse (Manhattan)

Under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Registered Nurse - Head Nurse is responsible for overseeing and supervising medical services, including medication dispensing and medical visits across all clinics. This role ensures that regulatory compliance, fiscal accountability, productivity, and quality standards are maintained to deliver high-quality patient care. The Head Nurse promotes and restores patients' health by directing and developing nursing staff and collaborating effectively with members of the Multidisciplinary Team to provide comprehensive care. This position requires strong leadership skills, clinical expertise, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Essential Functions

Staff Supervision and Scheduling

  • Promote Communication: Foster team building and an open-door policy across all disciplines to enhance communication with staff.
  • Managerial Duties: Fulfill all managerial responsibilities for LPN and CMT staff, including training, supervision, coaching, career development, evaluations, and team meetings. Consult with the Director of Nursing on matters such as hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, disciplining, and other personnel actions.
  • Scheduling: Develop the monthly schedule for LPN and CMT staff, coordinating with the Director of Nursing on PTO requests and callouts at least one month in advance.
  • Time Management: Manage direct reports' attendance, including scheduling lunch breaks to ensure consistent coverage.
  • Deployment Management: Ensure adequate deployment of staff in the dispensary and medical units to optimize workflow and patient care.
  • Collaboration: Schedule and ensure LPNs and CMTs participate in interdisciplinary collaboration and case conferences.
  • Patient Assessments: Conduct patient assessments, prioritizing them based on urgency and need.
  • Emergency Response: Initiate emergency interventions when necessary and communicate patient status to the medical team, maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Patient Care: Provide care to patients who are ill, injured, or disabled, and offer guidance on health maintenance and disease prevention.
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Policy Development: Contribute to the development of new policies and procedures and suggest improvements to existing ones.
  • Consistency in Practice: Ensure consistent practices and protocols across clinics.
  • Training: Train LPNs and CMTs on new or updated clinical practices and procedures.
  • Controlled Substances: Conduct monthly reconciliations of controlled substances in the eCR system.
  • Competency Review: Annually review the competency skills of all direct reports.
  • Quality and Compliance Assurance
  • Reporting: Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all daily, weekly, and monthly reports.
  • Compliance: Report any deviations from dispensing or medication accountability procedures promptly to the Medical Provider and Director of Nursing.
  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor clinic performance monthly and collaborate with the Medicine team to develop and implement improvement plans.
  • Incident Review: Review Incident, Medication Error, and Discrepancy/Exception Reports, developing Corrective Action Plans as needed.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Oversee regular maintenance and inspection of medical and dispensary equipment, such as emergency kits and oxygen tanks.
  • Log Management: Complete monthly medication expiration and refrigerator logs, as well as other required reports.
  • Documentation Audits: Audit clinical documentation in the medical record system to ensure proper clinical care.
  • Supply Management: Conduct weekly inventory assessments and ensure timely re-stocking orders, maintaining a three-week supply of medications.
  • Audit Preparation: Prepare and present required documents for internal and external audits.
  • Inventory Management: Conduct monthly inventories of medications and controlled substances, ensuring a three-month supply is maintained.
  • Treatment Plans: Participate in the review of Treatment Plans and Case Conferences.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Collaborate with the clinical team to plan and facilitate emergency preparedness drills, submitting after-action reports.
  • Committee Participation: Participate in agency standing Management Committees, such as Health & Safety and Continuous Quality Improvement, if assigned.
  • Communication: Maintain proactive, open, and constructive communication with both management and non-management colleagues.
  • Additional Duties: Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing, Clinic Director, or
  • Chief Medical Officer, as outlined in the Clinical Manual.

Required Qualifications

  • Current New York State Registered Nurse Licensure
  • Bachelor’s degree in a registered nursing program
  • Minimum of one (1) year of nursing management experience with three (3) years’ experience in a substance abuse treatment setting.
  • Phlebotomy and BLS certifications and proficiency.
  • Passionate about working with individuals who need assistance.
  • Highly proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
  • Within three (3) months after hire, must be competent in the use of agency’s software including, but not limited to, Perform Yard, Web Purchasing, Excel, and e-mail system, as well as electronic medical and health records.
  • Maintain licensure and certifications.

Preferred Qualifcations

  • Master’s Degree
  • Bilingual in Spanish

Additional Requirements

  • Able to travel occasionally to other company facilities around NYC and Brooklyn
  • Able to work outside the traditional clinic hours upon request by the DON.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position supervises the Licensed Practical Nurse and Certified Medical Technician.
