The post holder will always work within the scope of practice, putting the health, wellbeing and safety of their patient first as they assess, plan, implement and evaluate their needs.
- Be responsible for providing and coordinating patient care, educating patients and the public about various health conditions, and providing advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
- Assess and identify patients' needs and implement and monitor the patient's medical plan and treatment. They will work with a team of physicians and other health care specialists or allied health in various settings.
- Perform systematic patient assessment, re-assessment and collect pertinent data about the patient’s health or situation.
- Understand and analyse the assessment information and data.

- Prepare patients for medical examination and treatment.
- Administer medications and monitor patients for any side effects and reactions.
- Administer treatments such as IV fluids or blood products and monitor patients for any reactions.
- Provide wound care management.
- Assist in medical procedures invasive or non-invasive as needed.
- Facilitate the process of safe patient`s admission, transfer and discharge.
- Competent with all the mandatory and unit specific competencies supported and assigned on the Elsevier platform to ensure adherence to evidence Based practices.
- Demonstrate proficiency in emergency procedures, equipment, and protocols relevant to the department.
- Participate in ongoing programs and certification to support professional growth and maintain clinical competency.
- Comply with unit Scope of Service.
- Participate in ongoing emergency specific trainings (e.g., BLS, NRP, and PROMPT certification
- Demonstrate on understanding & Utilization of evidence-based health care.
- Performs all aspects of nursing care for patients who are in maternity ward in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of health care errors.
- Must have excellent observation skills, able to think critically and to make quick and effective decisions.
- Able to perform procedures like: Application of external electronic fetal monitor, Arterial Blood Gas Analysis, CTG interpretation, Fetal heart auscultation using Fetal Doppler, Administration of Syntocinon infusion, Post-natal care and Antenatal Care, Assisting vaginal speculum examination, Female urethral catheterization, IV Cannulation, Administering blood and blood products, Obtaining 12-Lead ECG, Blood glucose monitoring, Wound care, Oxygen administration, Blood pressure checking, Oro-nasopharyngeal suctioning.
- Able to assist in procedures like: Vaginal examination, Use of amnicator, Induction of labour, Insertion of Prostin, Collection of arterial and venous blood gas.
- Complete care and safety of allocated patients.
- Accurately monitor and record patient’s condition.
- Perform a head-to-toe assessment and re-assessments on patient as per assessment policy.
- Perform complete pre-operative and postoperative care to patient.
- Adequately assess and re-assess pain as per Pain Assessment Policy.
- Report any abnormality in a patient’s condition immediately to the medical staff and escalate as and when required.
- Document on patient record as per current standards and policies.
- Preparation of patient for Emergency surgeries.
- Organize assigned duties.
- Able to function efficiently in patient care within the unit and relieve other nursing units in the hospital if necessary.
- Follows hospital policies on medication administration.
- Safe custody and administration of drugs/narcotics as per hospital policy.
- Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age and weight of the patient and their clinical condition.
- Follows the ten medication rights before administering any medication.
- Communicates appropriate information to patients and their relatives.
- Educates the patient and family regarding the disease, medication, diet, pain management, rehabilitation etc. and according to the identified individual need provide educational materials if available.
- Educate the mother on significance of breast feeding.
- Educate on post-natal care, hygiene and antenatal care
- Performs competency in point of care testing and ensure quality requirements.
- Able to handle all equipment in the unit like: CTG Machine, Cardiac Monitor, Fetal Doppler, Infusion Pump, Crash trolley, Defibrillator, Cardiac Monitor, Ambubag/Laryngeal Mask, Laryngoscope, Oxygen cylinder on crash trolley, Suction machine on crash trolley, Braun Thermoscan, Pulse Oxymeter, Nebulizer Machine, Glucometer, Diagnostic Set (Opthalmoscope and Otoscope), Bed Pan Washer, Weighing Scale
- Ensures all equipment is maintained in good working order, reporting any fault to Nurse Manager/Engineering.
- Have an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all the qualifications and experience these mandates.
- Manage their own professional re-licensure.
- Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.
- Be willing to work across departments and On Call when necessary.
- Be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English (spoken and written)
DESIRABLE: The post holder should have:
- Evidenced ability to work as part of an inter-professional team.
- Organizational and administrative skills with which to use the electronic medical record platform for clinical documentation.
