Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Registered Nurse Pre-Operative (Pre-Op) to join our dynamic healthcare team. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of pre-operative patient assessment, preparation, and education, ensuring optimal patient outcomes and safety. As a Registered Nurse Pre-Op, you will play a vital role in coordinating care for surgical patients, utilizing advanced clinical skills, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver exceptional patient-centered care in a fast-paced environment.
Duties
- Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments, including vital signs, medical history review, and physical examinations to evaluate patient readiness for surgery.
- Educate patients and their families on pre-operative procedures, anesthesia preparations, and post-operative expectations to reduce anxiety and improve compliance.
- Prepare patients for surgery by establishing IV access, administering medications as prescribed, and ensuring aseptic technique during procedures such as suturing or catheter care.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care plans and ensure seamless surgical workflows.
- Monitor and document patient responses during pre-op procedures using electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner, maintaining accurate medical documentation.
- Assist with specimen collection and processing, laboratory testing, and diagnostic evaluations as needed to support surgical planning.
- Maintain strict infection control protocols and adhere to HIPAA regulations to protect patient confidentiality and safety.
- Provide emotional support to patients experiencing acute pain or anxiety while ensuring effective airway management and vital signs monitoring.
Requirements
- Valid nursing license with current registration in the applicable state or region.
- Proven experience in pre-operative nursing within hospital medicine or outpatient surgical settings.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology relevant to perioperative care.
- Experience working with EMR/EHR systems such as Epic or Cerner for documentation and order entry.
- Familiarity with aseptic technique, IV insertion, catheterization, suturing, and sterile processing practices.
- Critical care experience in ICU or emergency room settings is highly desirable for managing complex cases.
- Ability to perform comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs measurement and physical examinations.
- Knowledge of ICD-10 coding standards for accurate documentation of diagnoses related to perioperative care.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to educate patients effectively while working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Additional certifications such as Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) are required.
