Burn/ENT Special Care Unit (BESCU)- 5 South

The Burn/ENT Special Care Unit (BESCU) provides specialized care for a diverse group of

older adolescent and adult patients. The service manages individuals with acute burn injuries,

complex wounds, and various skin conditions requiring advanced treatment and reconstruction.

In addition, BESCU delivers expert care for Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) patients undergoing

major head and neck cancer surgery and reconstructive procedures, including free flap

reconstruction. The unit also supports patients with newly created surgical airways such as

tracheostomies, laryngectomies, and stents, as well as those receiving treatment for airway

stenosis and other complex ENT reconstruction surgeries.

The inpatient ICU is a 10-bed unit with variable acuity.

Unit Details
:

  • Integration of wound, plastic, reconstructive, and airway management expertise

in one dedicated unit

  • The variable acuity unit ensures continuity of patient care from admission to

discharge for all burn patients.

  • Collaboration with multi-disciplinary team to achieve integrated, patientcentered

approach.


The Registered Nurse (RN) is an individual who holds a current state license to practice nursing.

The practice of nursing requires specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide care to

groups and individuals. The RN utilizes knowledge derived from the principles of biological,

physical, behavioral, social and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient

care. The care is culturally based and age-specific.

  • Prepares, implements evaluates, revises, and coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care for

each assigned patient in a collaborative effort with the other healthcare team members

and patient/family within the time frame indicated by the unit's standards of practice.

  • Communicates formulated plan of care, as appropriate, to all levels of associates involved

in the patient's care, and demonstrates the ability to establish priorities of care based on

the patient's assessment and needs.

  • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment, and involves

family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient.

  • Identifies and responds appropriately to different patient needs resulting from behavioral

health problems, unique psychological needs, or those associated with religious/cultural

norms.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking, accountability, flexibility, and a cooperative attitude in

meeting the needs of the unit.

  • The nursing process is accurately and concisely documented, including evaluation of

treatment and in accordance with hospital policy and procedure.

  • Acts as a resource person and mentor for new personnel, floater, and/or supplemental

staff working on the unit.

  • Assumes responsibility for personal and professional development and contributes to the

professional development of peers, colleagues, and others


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Associate’s Degree, the minimum required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • Current OH RN License
