Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Critical Care Supervisor - Cardiopulmonary (Days)

The Registered Respiratory Therapist performs Cardiopulmonary duties in accordance with hospital policy procedure under general supervision. This can include administering of respiratory treatments, airway management, ventilator management, blood gases, and other noninvasive cardiology procedures. This individual will be held to a high level of customer service representation and will be an active participant in the continuous quality improvement process. The RRT ICU supervisor will also be responsible for the oversight of all activities of the therapists assigned to him her and be involved in the training and evaluation of these employees.

Required Knowledge & Skills

Education: Associate Degree or 2 years of college coursework

Experience: Three years of related experience. Requires working knowledge of specialized practices, equipment, and procedures.

Licenses and Certifications

  • REGISTERED RESPIRATORY THERAPIST
  • HEALTHCARE PROVIDER (CPR)
  • ACLS CERTIFICATION
  • RESPIRATORY CARE PROFESSIONAL
  • PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT

Qualifications

  • Completion of AMA accredited school for Respiratory Therapy.
  • Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.
  • Must complete PALS and ACLS within first 8 months of employment.
  • If not currently RRT, must obtain certification within 18 months of accepting the position.
  • Adult Critical Care Specialty Certification (ACCS) from the AARC must be obtained within 24 months of acceptance to position.

Functions

Area of Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Cardiopulmonary Clinical Coordinator, assists with the daily operation of Respiratory Therapy ICU services. Working knowledge of department policies and procedures and standards of care/practice. Documentation is in compliance with hospital policy and regulatory agencies.
  • Administers respiratory treatments and oxygen therapy correctly and in a timely manner. Participates in airway management during CODEs. Performs ventilator care according to established policy and protocols. Must be able to set priorities to complete daily assignments.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to patients, visitors, physicians, and other employees. Through the established systems and protocols used to evaluate staff for excellent customer service, employee will achieve the set goals.
  • Provides consistent, accurate and supportive supervision to all assigned employees. Assures that all work is done with orders, appropriate therapy, complete documentation, and accurate charges. Demonstrates the ability to coordinate cardiopulmonary care of the patient with other departments which fosters multidisciplinary care planning.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities by helping to identify, monitor, and achieve improvement goals established by the department.
  • Effectively operates and understands the use of specialized equipment.
  • Acts as preceptor/mentor for students and new employees.
  • Participates in multi disciplinary patient care conferences.
  • Accurately evaluates self and meets pre-established professional goals.
  • Accountable for use and ordering of supplies and maintaining inventory.
  • Demonstrates behaviors necessary for age-specific care and knowledge of decision making process for all ages of the population(s) served. Demonstrates ability to communicate appropriately with various ages. Demonstrates ability to adapt technique treatment to age of the patient served. As appropriate, involves family significant other in the treatment process.
  • Complies with standards set forth by the Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies.
  • Knowledge of and follows OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Regulations.
  • Demonstrates awareness of policies and procedures regarding restraints, and administers procedures appropriately to restrained patients.
  • Participates in continuing education as mandated per policy.
  • Primary liaison between physicians and respiratory staff to build solid relationships and open lines of communication.
  • Provides regular ongoing drills and education to both RT and Nursing staff on respiratory specific topics to assure ongoing competency and open communication.
  • Assist in Annual Skills Day planning and execution with departmental educator.
  • Assists with new hire respiratory and nursing orientation.
  • Regularly and openly communicates with the Clinical Coordinator and Director of observations and ways to streamline and improve quality care in all critical care areas.
  • Actively works in the development of any new critical care areas with educator, director, and clinical coordinator to assure smooth and efficient operations as facility grows.
  • Actively looks for ways to improve care and works with departmental leaders on tracking data.
  • Will join the resource call rotation for system cardiopulmonary leaders for after hours and weekend coverage.
  • Supervisor will work one weekend defined as Saturday and Sunday per 6-week schedule to assure those who are primary weekend staff have needed support and ongoing education.
  • Will maintain Adult Critical Care Specialty Credential and staff up to date on the most recent practices through the American Society of Respiratory Care.
  • Additional responsibilities as deemed necessary by clinical coordinator and or department director.

Compliance Statement

Employee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.

Supervision

Responsible for all activities provided by assigned staff during that shift. Oversees work to assure that orders, therapy, documentation, and charting of each therapist is done per policy and protocol. Orients all new therapists and corrects their work as function of staff development. Assists with employee evaluations.
