Reliability Engineer

Role Purpose:

Provide reliability engineering support to Underground (UG) maintenance planning to improve asset availability, reduce unplanned downtime, and optimise life-cycle cost for UG mobile and fixed assets. The role analyses failure and maintenance data, develops and improves preventive maintenance strategies, facilitates root cause investigations, and delivers performance insights that enable risk-based planning, efficient execution, and compliance with SGM and OEM standards.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

1.Operational / Technical / Core Duties:

Reliability Analytics & Asset Health

  • Analyze UG maintenance history, downtime, and condition data to identify failure trends and reliability risks.
  • Maintain asset health dashboards and critical equipment watchlists to support risk-based weekly planning decisions.
  • Validate failure coding and work order quality to ensure data integrity for reliability analysis and reporting.

Maintenance Strategy Optimisation

  • Review and optimise preventive maintenance (PM) and inspection plans to improve equipment availability and reduce repeat failures.
  • Develop job plans and task lists aligned to OEM recommendations, statutory requirements, and site critical controls.
  • Apply risk-based maintenance principles (criticality, failure modes, consequence) to prioritise strategy improvements.

Root Cause Investigation & Action Management

  • Facilitate structured root cause analyses (RCA) for significant UG equipment failures to prevent recurrence.
  • Define corrective and preventive actions with clear owners, due dates, and verification criteria.
  • Monitor action closure and effectiveness and escalate overdue or ineffective controls to maintenance leadership.

Condition Monitoring & Predictive Maintenance Integration

  • Integrate condition monitoring findings (e.g., vibration, oil analysis, thermography, inspections) into maintenance plans and shutdown scopes.
  • Recommend intervention thresholds and response plans to control risk and avoid secondary damage.
  • Coordinate with condition monitoring resources and OEMs to confirm diagnostic accuracy and recommended actions.

Planning Support & Work Management

  • Support UG maintenance planners with reliability inputs that improve job readiness, scope definition, and schedule stability.
  • Review work backlog health and identify reliability-driven work that must be expedited to protect production and safety.
  • Participate in weekly planning and review meetings to provide technical recommendations and constraint resolution.

Performance Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Produce weekly/monthly reliability reports highlighting drivers of downtime, repeat failures, and improvement opportunities.
  • Lead or support continuous improvement initiatives that standardise best practices and improve execution quality.
  • Maintain controlled reliability documentation (RCAs, strategies, standards, dashboards) for audit and knowledge retention.

2.Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) / Compliance Duties:

HSE Risk Controls in Maintenance Strategies

  • Embed SGM critical controls and legal requirements into PM tasks, job plans, and execution instructions for UG work.
  • Verify reliability recommendations consider underground hazards (line-of-fire, stored energy, confined spaces, ventilation, electrical isolation).
  • Promote stop-work authority and ensure risk assessments and permits are applied for reliability-led interventions.

Compliance, Assurance & Incident Learning

  • Support incident investigations and learning reviews by analysing maintenance and equipment performance evidence.
  • Track closure of maintenance-related corrective actions and confirm controls are implemented and sustained.
  • Maintain documentation to demonstrate compliance with site procedures, OEM standards, and governance requirements.

3.Financial / Budget / Asset / Resource Management (if applicable):

Cost & Life-Cycle Value Improvement

  • Identify cost drivers from repeat failures and recommend actions that reduce component consumption and rework.
  • Quantify and track reliability improvements (downtime reduction, component life extension) to support value demonstration.
  • Support shutdown and campaign planning by defining risk-based scopes that minimise overtime and contract escalation.

Critical Spares & Inventory Optimisation

  • Conduct critical spares reviews based on asset criticality, lead times, and failure history to reduce stock-out risk.
  • Support optimization of min/max parameters and stocking strategies to balance availability and working capital.
  • Provide evidence-based inputs to procurement for long-lead reliability-critical components and OEM parts.
