About Us
We’re a boutique California family law practice that pairs affordability with a supportive, client-centered approach for working-class families navigating some of the toughest moments of their lives. A large portion of our caseload involves parents in child custody and parenting-time matters, though we handle the full spectrum of family law issues.

The Role
We’re seeking a fully remote, hourly contract paralegal who is warm, friendly, and empathetic, with California family law experience. You’ll collaborate closely with an attorney to move cases forward efficiently while keeping clients informed, supported, and grounded. You’ll work remotely and set your own schedule within court and internal deadlines and orient your work toward our workflows.

Firm Culture

We’re a small but rapidly growing firm. We believe legal skill and kindness (to everyone, including the opposing parties and counsel) belong together. We keep our services accessible to working families, communicate clearly and patiently, and we meet clients where they are—with dignity and respect. We work hard to protect our relationships (to the members of our firm as well as the families we represent). (If you are consistently aggressive, combative, or sarcastic under pressure, for example, this won’t be a good fit.) Finally, we believe in excellence in all our work (always) and constantly seeking to improve in all areas of life.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as a compassionate, steady point of contact for clients—mostly parents in custody matters—while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Draft, format, and file California family law pleadings (e.g., RFOs/FL-300s, Income & Expense Declarations/FL-150s, declarations, proofs of service, stipulations, DVRO filings, disclosures, settlement documents) with Microsoft Word and Clio Draft (formerly, Lawyaw).
  • Prepare discovery (form/special interrogatories, RFAs, RFPs), subpoenas, exhibit lists, and hearing/trial binders.
  • Manage case calendars, deadlines, and court dates in Clio Manage; assist with task/budget tracking and basic billing entries. We heavily leverage the Clio Manage tools and capabilities—can train if you’re unfamiliar, but you’ll need to be relatively tech savvy to keep up here.
  • Handle e-filing (soon to also be in Clio) and attorney service providers across California courts with a keen eye to following the California Rules of Court and local court rules.
  • Organize and summarize records, prepare attorney/client checklists for hearings, mediation, MSCs, and settlement conferences.
  • Maintain meticulous digital client files following the firm’s structure.

What You Bring

  • Compliance with California Bus. & Prof. Code § 6450 et seq.
  • 2+ years California family law paralegal experience (firm or solo practice setting).
  • Comfort working primarily with custody/parenting-time issues; trauma-informed, client-centered communication style.
  • Strong drafting, proofreading, and cite-checking; excellent organization and follow-through.
  • Practical knowledge of CRC and local rules, e-filing procedures, and common family law forms.
  • Tech-savvy with Clio Manage, Clio Draft (Lawyaw), and Microsoft Office—or eager to learn with our guidance.
  • Reliable availability during California business hours; ability to manage project-based workloads and priorities that shift frequently.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.. California or West Coast residency preferred for time-zone and court practice familiarity.

Nice to Have

  • Spanish or another second language.

Compensation & Hours

  • Status: Independent contractor (1099), hourly.
  • Hours: Flexible, project-based; workload varies by caseload. Estimated at 10-20 hours per week, but can increase or decrease depending on caseload and your needs.
  • Rate: Competitive and commensurate with experience (please include your desired hourly rate).
  • While this is a contractor role, our firm is intentional about supporting all the people who support our clients.

How to Apply
Please submit:

  • resume (PDF),
  • a brief cover note about your custody/family-law background and communication style,
  • a redacted writing sample (e.g., declaration, points & authorities, or RFO package), and
  • your availability (weekly hours) and desired hourly rate.
