R&D Technician
JOB PURPOSE: The R&D Technician is responsible for assisting in developing skin, body, and hair care formulations from concept to launch, while maintaining accurate and up-to-date documentation following Good Documentation Practices (GDP).

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain a laboratory setting that meets safety and sanitary standards.
  • Work closely with the Cosmetic Chemist to facilitate accurate and timely product formulation and development through collaboration with the NPD Manager and laboratory assistant
  • Work in conjunction with laboratory assistants to accomplish daily R&D tasks
  • Actively research new concepts, raw materials, and product improvements.
  • Discuss raw material information and innovation with suppliers.
  • Create marketing sheets for clients' understanding of new product samples.
  • Perform and maintain accurate records of routine analytical and physical testing.
  • Follow established R&D processes and ensure approved formulas has completed all necessary pre-market steps (documentation, testing, specifications, pilot monitoring, etc)
  • Monitor product stability and safety testing and make improvements as needed. Report findings during monitoring and completing stability studies to R&D. Participate in maintaining and updating the stability procedures in place.
  • Review manufacturing procedures on an ongoing basis and ensure processes are aligned with updated processes
  • Develop an understanding and implementation of ingredients together to formulate alongside the Cosmetic Chemist and laboratory assistants
  • Interact with manufacturing, production, purchasing and QA/QC departments ensuring correct transfer of R&D created and owned processes.
  • Follow Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Collaborate with Purchasing, Production, Regulatory, and Quality departments to ensure product manufacturing is satisfactory.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Clean climate controlled laboratory space

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Entry level position

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Preferred 1+ years’ experience in personal care product formulation and development

EDUCATION REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry desired

Focus on Cosmetic chemistry desired

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Closely follows PPE requirements within laboratory setting
  • Ability to independently use a computer and use online platforms such as SharePoint for information sharing
  • Advanced formulation skills and technical knowledge
  • Moderate to thorough understanding of FDA regulations and cGMP’s
  • Drives creative research and strategic recommendations for product development.
  • Able to translate consumer insights into actionable recommendations to achieve exceptional consumer satisfaction.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, in a fast-paced environment under short deadlines, tolerance for business ambiguity; the ability to thrive under quickly changing situations; adaptable.
  • Methodological mindset to test new ideas and work towards valid results.
  • Proven ability to manage external suppliers and ensure top value and performance for the organization.
  • Self-motivated and able to operate independently, as well as work effectively with others.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • High level of initiative, innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work cross-functionally & at all levels within the organization including senior leadership.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and high level of accuracy & organization
  • Some demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in an administrative role
  • Experience with understanding and working with information management systems required
  • Experience with Cosmetri preferred but not required
  • Ability to stay organized and relay detail oriented information in an appropriate manner
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs required
  • Excel, Word, Outlook

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Employee is regularly required to talk or hear
  • Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and arms to reach for items and / or materials
  • Employee is occasionally required to lift office products and supplies, up to 35 pounds.
