Position Summary/ Department Summary:
Research Assistant I, Experimental Neurophysiology Core (ENC) at IDDRC, affiliated with FM Kirby Neurobiology Center

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform a variety of routine laboratory experiments and procedures relevant for biochemistry and molecular biology background
  • Utilize standard laboratory equipment, recording results, maintaining records ensuring completeness and accuracy
  • Perform live animal procedures involving rodents (mice and rats), use of surgical tools, needles, for biologics and medicine administration
  • Assist in troubleshooting procedures if experimental results are unexpected or quality of specimens is poor
  • Perform the following techniques typically required for the laboratory/study:
    • Maintain records of results and methodologies in a logbook
    • Maintain equipment, lab area, and supplies in a neat professional manner
    • Sterilize, clean glassware, and prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures
    • Maintain inventory supplies, alerts supervisor to needed supplies, or mixes standard reagents
    • Process order for supplies and/or animals. Attends courses in safety procedures for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive, and toxic materials
    • Carry out relevant laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols
  • Conduct literature search and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I.
  • Attend courses, lectures, and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information.
  • Contribute to the team within and between departments and organizations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree is required with a preferred focus in Biology, Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry.

Experience:
  • Basic laboratory training is preferred.
