Cumming School of Medicine
invites applications for a
Research Assistant
. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Research Assistant primary purpose is to assist the Principal Investigator and support the research team by overseeing the screening procedures, sleep-based research studies and analytical and statistical analysis of data. In addition, they will be responsible for providing direction and training others in these areas. Success in the role will require strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills, judgment and decision making, following procedures and guidelines set by the PI, and extensive daily collaboration with the research team.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

Assist in Laboratory Based Experiments and Sleep Studies

Directing and training others

Data Analysis

Reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment
-
Assists other staff and students in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols
-
Assist in processing various biological samples (e.g. tissues, blood, urine, etc)
-
Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe
-
Ensures supplies and lab equipment are clean and well stocked
-
Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
-
Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
-
Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization
Qualifications / Requirements:
-
Background in integrative human/exercise physiology preferred
-
Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English
-
Ability to work with close attention to detail
-
Previous research experience working with human volunteers and/or patients in physiology research environment
-
Experience with maximal exercise testing
-
Familiarization with Transcranial Doppler ultrasound, exercise training programs and/or biochemistry laboratory techniques (e.g. blood sampling, centrifugation, storage, and assay analyses) will be assets

Knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures
-
Demonstrate a high level of knowledge in participant/patient interviewing, statistical applications and working with large data sets

Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
-
Provide semi-skilled to skilled technical procedures to support the research project
-
Assist in the operation and maintenance of complex technical equipment
-
Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines

Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet, and Data Management Systems
-
Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
