Research Consultant, Gulf & Arabian Peninsula Project

Background:

Crisis Group is seeking a Research Consultant to support its Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Project which seeks to enhance understanding of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries' mediation efforts worldwide. This initiative aims to systematically track, investigate, analyze, and document mediation activities conducted by Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf Cooperation Council across various international conflicts and disputes. We expect a time commitment of around 16 hrs per week.

Objective:

• To assist in designing, building and maintaining an up-to-date database of mediation initiatives and efforts involving the GCC countries.

• To investigate and collect reliable data on Gulf mediation practices worldwide.

• To provide analytical support and drafting assistance for articles and reports on Gulf mediation trends and patterns.

Scope of work:

• Conduct research on mediation efforts by GCC countries across global conflicts.

• Identify and track mediation initiatives.

• Collect primary and secondary source materials.

• Conduct interviews with relevant stakeholders when appropriate.

• Monitor media, government statements, and diplomatic communications.

• Verify accuracy of collected information through cross-referencing.

Required Qualifications:

• Post-graduate student level or higher in International Relations, Middle Eastern Studies, Political Science, or a related field.

• Strong research, analytical and drafting skills in both Arabic and English. Native or working level proficiency in Arabic is essential.

• Strong connections to and/or based in the Middle East/Gulf region or strong regional connections.

• Proven experience in research and data collection, ideally related to mediation, conflict resolution, or international relations in the Middle East.

• Knowledge and experience in quantitative research methods is an asset.

• Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail and reliability.
