Job SummaryThe American Board of Family Medicine was established in 1969 and is one of the 24 medical specialty boards that are members of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). ABFM Research conducts, and publishes research devoted to creating, evaluating, and maintaining cutting-edge certification methods, and to advancing the scientific basis of family medicine. ABFM’s Research Department investigates issues relating to family medicine and its role in the health care system. Our data assets include longitudinal survey data from family physicians and a nationwide registry of primary care practice records called the American Family Cohort. We are seeking a curious and resourceful Data Analyst to deepen analyses, improve data resources, and translate findings into publishable insights.Position Summary
The Research Data Analyst will work with the Research Data Scientist under the direction of the Vice President of Research as part of a small, diverse mixed-methods research team. The role supports statistical analyses, development of data resources, and contributions to manuscripts, reports, and presentations. We also have research collaborations with several research universities as well as federal and state agencies that this position will help to support. Opportunities to publish and present are expected.
Role OverviewData Collection & Management
· Analyze, clean, and maintain large datasets (survey, registry, and administrative/claims-style data as applicable).
· Implements and maintains data standards and uses automation tools to extract, synthesize, and validate data from various sources, transforming data into actionable metrics.
· Develop reproducible data pipelines and documentation to support research deliverables.
· Builds data sets, monitors data quality, and troubleshoots database issues to maintain data integrity.
· Design and manage data collection tools such as surveys, forms, and data systems.
Data Analysis & Research
· Supports research initiatives and carries out data analytics projects to provide information and insights for stakeholder decision-making and solution development.
· Support statistical analyses in R and/or Python; contribute to tables, figures, and written summaries.
· Interpret research results and translate findings into meaningful insights.
Collaboration & Strategic Support
· Collaborate with internal and external research partners; provide technical support as needed.
· Contribute to manuscripts, presentations, and other dissemination materials.
· Occasional travel to work with partner organizations and/or present at national conferences.
Compliance & Data Governance
· Ensure compliance with data privacy, research ethics, and confidentiality standards.
· Maintain documentation for research protocols and data handling procedures.
· Support audits and quality assurance processes related to research data.
QualificationsEducation
· Master’s degree in a quantitative field (public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, data science or health services research preferred).
Experience
· Prior research experience in large data analysis (such as Medicare or claims data) preferred.
· Prior experience with natural language processing and large language models preferred.
Technical Skills
· Strong proficiency in Excel and data analysis tools.
· Experience with SQL, R, Python, SPSS, SAS, or similar statistical software.
· Familiarity with data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar).
· Experience designing surveys and managing research datasets.

Work Environment
The ABFM has offices in Lexington, KY and Washington, DC. Work is hybrid, but some weekly work in the office in-person is required for the purposes of building strong team chemistry across shared projects.
Pay: $71,600.00 - $90,000.00 per year
