Mission of the position: Advance Mott’s filtration and flow control science and related processes by conceiving, proving, and maturing breakthrough technologies that enable next‑generation products for Medicine, Computing Power, Clean Energy, and Space Exploration. As a senior individual contributor, and member of the Extended Leadership Team, the Research Fellow sets the scientific bar for experimental rigor, intellectual property creation, and external collaborations that accelerate capability development and value creation for the business.

Key Responsibilities:


Major Challenges:


  • Strategic Leadership
    : Define and execute high‑impact research themes aligned to Mott’s market priorities; guide multi‑year technology roadmap development. Serve as a cross-program technical mentor.
  • Experimental Design: Define robust experimental frameworks and Design of Experiments (DOE) with clear metrology and acceptance criteria. Execute complex experiments and scale results into manufacturable concepts.
  • IP and Patent Ownership: Generate invention disclosures and patents; partner with internal and external counsel on IP strategy.
  • Industry Representation: Establish and lead research partnerships with academic institutions and national laboratories. Identify external funding opportunities and grant proposals.


  • Balancing quick iteration with documentation rigor necessary for quality systems and IP.
  • Establishing reliable, scalable measurement methods for novel porous capabilities.
  • Moving new technology into a rapidly growing business and convincing internal stakeholders on technology readiness.
  • Limited published data on porous metals and customer applications.
  • Managing complex projects that may require cross functional and external resource engagement to succeed.


Expected Performance Outcomes:


Required Experience
:


  • Invention Disclosures:
    • File 3-5 invention disclosures and submit 2 patents within 24 months.
  • Capability Industrialization:
    • Scale at least 2 new capabilities into production annually
    • Documented procedures for DOE, metrology and scale up adopted by R&D team
  • External Partnerships:
    • Identify and source university and national lab partnerships delivering measurable technical outcomes


  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering or related field. Ceramics knowledge a plus.
  • 15+ years of experience in a manufacturing development environment.
  • Security clearance preferred, but not required.

  • Deep technical expertise in materials science, mechanical engineering or metallurgy. Knowledge in fluid mechanics is a plus.
