What we want

The Research Scientist at High Performance Research Computing (HPRC) supports HPRC’s education and training by performing technical duties such as designing and delivering face-to-face and online professional development to researchers and teachers, developing extramural funding proposals, working with graduate and/or undergraduate students to conduct research in computing and STEM research, and writing manuscripts for computing and STEM conferences and journals. Initiate activities to promote High Performance Research Computing. The Research Scientist will focus on supporting the educational and training outcomes of HPRC including the NSF ACSS Track II: ACES award made to Texas A&M; assist customers using high-performance computing resources and teaching tutorials and technologies that advance research computing practices; develop documentation and training materials and offer training courses.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • PhD in a computational field of science

  • Six years of related experience in a specialized and relevant field of research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with offering support and training on research computing frameworks and their application to problems in one or more scientific domains

  • Ability to complete tasks on time

  • Ability to write scientific, general purpose, technical documents, proposals, and papers

  • Familiarity with scientific applications common to research computing environments

  • Proficiency with programming languages and popular analysis toolkits commonly used in research computing environments

  • Ability to grasp upcoming technologies and teach them to a research computing audience

  • Familiarity with organizing information and data management services

  • Experience with K-12 student programs.

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships with people of various backgrounds

  • Experience in developing partnerships and collaborations involving research computing

  • Ability to travel both nationally and internationally

  • Ability to construct feedback surveys, scrutinize resulting data for patterns, analyze data, development the framework for a research paper, and lead the writing of the paper

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to develop, coordinate, and manage education and training programs.

  • Excellent teaching, writing and interpersonal communication skills

  • Knowledge of technologies used in advanced research computing and artificial intelligence frameworks

  • Proficiency with common programming languages, tools, and techniques.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Experience in curriculum development, including vertical alignment and developing learning objectives

  • Ability to positively and professionally interact with clients and staff, groups of various sizes

Responsibilities

Consulting, Proposal Participation, And Dissemination

  • Provides leadership and expertise to the facility’s user community in the education and training aspects of their research through intensive consulting, training and general support activities, all aiming at integrating HPC technologies into research and education.

  • Supports and participates in activities aimed toward the pursuit of extramural funding.

  • Responds to user queries regarding research computing resources.

  • Supports funded efforts at HPRC.

  • Travel to conferences and events at times.

HPRC Operations, Outreach and Training

  • Participates in mentoring, training, and development of HPRC users and employees.

  • Provides training courses on research computing techniques to staff and users.

  • Aids in the development of ad-hoc programs for customers of high-performance computing resources.

  • Participates in HPRC’s community outreach efforts.

Research

  • Conducts self-guided research in topics relevant to research computing and STEM education.

  • Presents findings at conferences and through publications in proceedings and professional journals.

  • Builds collaborations and pursues external funding opportunities.

  • Presents research-findings via publications and conference presentations.

Resource Allocation System & User Support

  • Serves as the secondary information resource for access to the University’s main HPRC equipment.

  • Manages and coordinates HPC user accounts and applications for time on several separate HPRC systems.

  • Initiates the evaluation process of user application for time on all HPRC systems.

  • Maintains the software platform that manages the corresponding database.

  • Coordinates the review of applications/requests for HPC time on behalf of the HPRC Resources Allocation Committee (RAC).

  • Collects, analyzes, and presents relevant user data to the Committee to make an informed determination for awarding or not awarding requests for machine time.

  • Records minutes as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
