The incumbent works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor II of the Health Equity Research and Statistics Section (HERSS) in the Office of Health Equity (OHE). In accordance with legislative mandates, the Staff Research Scientist (RS) plans, organizes, and carries out scientific research studies of a highly developed scientific scope and complexity. The incumbent makes independent, complex decisions in their specific scientific field utilizing tools and methods in the areas of biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, project management, and informatics to develop metrics and data tools to monitor and report on the status of disparities in health and social determinants of health in California communities. The Staff RS serves as an advisor and mentor to Research Scientist staff in OHE. The Staff RS produces publication-quality data reports and visualizations and presents them to CDPH programs, external partners including the Health in All Policies Task Force, to inform efforts to reduce and eliminate disparities in health and mental health. The Staff RS is responsible for co-authoring reports requiring interpretation and clear summarization of results of descriptive and analytic data studies, with the goal of informing public health recommendations and activities aimed at reducing health and mental health disparities.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.

Travel may be required for this position. Reimbursement for travel takes into consideration an employee’s designated headquarters, as reflected in the duty statement, and is subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
