Compensation Range:

$26.90 - $37.66

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

GENERAL PURPOSE
To provide research and teaching support for experiments conducted within the Hammes lab. These experiments will serve as an invaluable tool in the publication of papers in scientific journals and grant proposals. The research specialist will work independently, co-manage day to day operations of the Endocrinology laboratory (including but not limited to, ordering and tracking expenses, maintaining equipment and certifications, tracking lab safety protocols, and assisting in mouse colony management), organize and troubleshoot experiments, and integrate different experimental approaches to address scientific aims.

SUPERVISION
This position reports to Stephen Hammes, M.D, Ph.D.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Work the PI and other members of the lab on research studies.

  • Participate in regular lab meetings providing presentations as well as help evaluate and troubleshoot other lab members' experiments; provide oral and written summaries, develop figures for publications.
  • Develop and initiate new research protocols
  • Perform basic theoretical and experimental scientific and technological investigation directed toward the acquisition of new knowledge.
  • Collects, analyzes, and evaluates experimental data and interprets results within the scope of the study.
  • Prepares written reports and graphic representations of experimental data using computer software and assists in writing and editing manuscripts for publication.
  • Collaborate in purchase, design and operation of lab supplies and equipment.
  • Keep lab and equipment up to code
  • May assist the faculty researchers in the preparation of research proposals.
  • May also co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/or conferences.

Responsible for mouse colony management and maintenance, including breeding and identification, monitoring of experimental animals.

  • Take charge of harvesting and processing of tissues from experimental and control animals.

Oversee organization of the lab including ordering of materials to maintain inventories.

  • Primary contact for safety and regulatory monitoring.
  • Prepare the laboratory for inspections.
  • Perform annual laboratory safety training.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • BS in biological sciences and at least 2 years of experience working in a basic research laboratory. Required
  • >5 years preferred
  • Masters degree and experience with tissue culture, primary culture, and animal handling
  • Familiarity with basic lab research techniques, including cell culture, molecular biology, and animal breeding and experimentation. Required


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Candidate must have excellent command of oral and written English language and work in a collaborative work environment. Preferred
  • Candidate must be able to work with rodents. Required
  • Computer skills including MS Word, Excel (required), Photoshop, FlowJo. Preferred
  • Occasional weekend and late hours may be necessary. Preferred
  • Must be able to troubleshoot experiments and equipment. Required
