Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Support Associate for the Child Health Institute of NJ at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Under the direction of Dr. Morgan Firestein (Principal Investigator) the Research Support Associate (RSA) will assist in multiple aspects of the lab’s research, including study design; participant screening and recruitment; and data collection, management, and analysis. In addition, the research support associate will also have opportunities to develop independent research projects and help organize and participate in outreach activities. The applicant should have a strong background in psychology, neuroscience and/or biology. Applicants must be able to conduct independent experiments and prepare written and oral reports. The RSA is expected to maintain a high level of communication with the PI. The RSA will be responsible for enrolling eligible pregnant individuals into a longitudinal study focused on understanding the role of prenatal extracellular vesicles in shaping brain development and infant behavior. The RSA will screen patients within the RWJMS/RBHS system for eligibility, and when appropriate, will present the study to eligible patients and obtain written informed consent. The RSA will be responsible for managing the conduct of the study through conducting infant and child neurobehavioral assessments, tracking participants’ involvement in the study procedures, maintaining regular contact with the participants, and scheduling participants for remote and in-person study procedures. The RSA will also be responsible for coordinating the timely collection, processing, and storage of biospecimens. The RSA will also be responsible for data entry, data management, and data analysis, which may result in opportunities to present original data at professional research conferences and through published manuscripts. The RSA will participate in lab meetings, research in progress seminars, and manage day-to-day operations of the lab, including the training of new personnel and purchase requests for lab supplies.

Qualified candidates should be a recent graduate; bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in psychology or biology. Prior experience with psychology, biology and/or a relevant clinical field is required.

As part of their career development to transition to the next phase of their career, the RSA will be trained in improving their experimental design skills and their oral and written presentation skills. Multiple resources for career development to aid with these requirements will be provided by the PI.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Screen patients for enrollment eligibility; approach and enroll eligible patients into the study.
  • Track participant progress and completion of study procedures.
  • Communicate with participants both verbally and through written communications in Spanish.
  • Maintain regular, professional contact with study participants and schedule study visits (remote and in-person) in a timely manner.
  • Conduct infant and child neurobehavioral assessments.
  • Enter data, including signed consent forms, into secure data management systems.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in psychology or biology, preferred.
  • Prior experience with psychology, biology and/or a relevant clinical field is required.
  • Must have a minimum of six (6) months of related research and/or clinical experience.

Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be fluent in both written and spoken Spanish and English.
  • Must have the ability to understand and communicate in English to sufficiently perform the job duties.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Applicant should be highly motivated, have excellent organizational skills, and be able to work collaboratively and independently under the guidance of the PI.
  • Must be able to assist in daily lab management.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a high level of comfort in working with infants, young children, and parents is strongly.

  • Must pass employee health clearance, TB Test and required laboratory safety training.
  • Must follow all safety precautions in laboratory, as required.
