Research technician

We are seeking candidates for a research technician in the laboratory of Dr. Jaeyeon Kim, an associate professor, in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Pharmacology at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM-Indianapolis) and IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Kim studies the molecular mechanisms underlying the development and progression of ovarian and breast cancer with genetically engineered mouse models and human specimens. The current research focus is to elucidate a conundrum surrounding high cancer risks and distinct cancer susceptibility among BRCA1 carriers. Despite the fact that every cell in their body has a harmful BRCA1 mutation, these women are predisposed particularly to ovarian and breast cancers. It remains a mystery. A seminal study (PNAS 2020; PMID: 33262282) from his lab points to the ovarian hormone progesterone as the culprit for BRCA1 carriers’ distinctive susceptibility to ovarian and breast cancer. This insight has challenged and changed the current paradigm of the estrogen carcinogenesis—presenting a new paradigm that progesterone is the real hormonal culprit underlying the seeming estrogen-associated breast cancer risk (Ann Oncol 2025; PMID: 39522613) (Journal of Clinical Oncology 2026; DOI: 10.1200/JCO-25-03084).

Integrating this novel insight and unique Brca1 mouse models, his lab is seeking to decipher the molecular mechanisms underlying the progesterone regulation of ovarian and breast cancer development in BRCA1 carriers—with an emphasis on DNA damage/repair, cell-cycle checkpoint regulation, and immune modulation. This innovative, high-impact research will not only reveal a basic molecular mechanism of cancer susceptibility with BRCA1 mutations, but this knowledge will also offer an innovative strategy for the effective nonsurgical prevention and control of these formidable cancers wreaking havoc on women.

Candidates for this position should have, or are expected to receive, a BS or an MS in biological or biomedical sciences. Research experience with mice or mouse models―accompanied by molecular biology skills, including PCR, QPCR, western blot, immunohistochemistry, and cell culture―would be desirable, though not required. A successful candidate for this position is willing to work with mice, including mouse management and genotyping, and participates in experiments involving mouse surgeries, blood drawing, and dissection. Also anticipated are the ability to learn to work independently and the motivation to learn new skills. The laboratory will offer an interactive, intellectually stimulating yet relaxed research and academic environment. Also, Dr. Kim will help promote the career development of researchers in the laboratory. As part of these efforts, besides research training, mentoring and training will also be offered in learning how to write and present their research and science effectively.

This position begins as part-time (up to 20 hours/week; $15/hour) for the first six months. Following a satisfactory evaluation, a transition to a full-time position may take 3 to 6 months. The annual salary for full-time starts at $39,000. Standard health insurance and retirement benefits are included with a full-time appointment.

If you are interested in participating in this research program of ovarian and breast cancer, please send (in pdf) CV (including eligibility, detailed research experience, and names of three references) to Dr. Jaeyeon Kim at jaeyeonk@iu.edu and prko15@gmail.com.
