Respiratory Therapist-PRN

Position Overview

The PRN Respiratory Therapist provides as-needed respiratory support to residents in a long-term care setting. This role focuses on chronic respiratory management, tracheostomy care, and collaboration with nursing staff to ensure safe, high-quality care during periods of increased need, staff shortages, or resident acuity changes.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

· Deliver respiratory therapy treatments on an as-needed basis, including oxygen therapy, aerosolized medications, and airway clearance techniques.

· Perform respiratory assessments and document findings according to facility standards.

· Provide complete tracheostomy care, including:

o Routine trach site cleaning and maintenance

o Inner cannula changes

o Suctioning and secretion management

o Monitoring for infection or complications

o Emergency trach response and troubleshooting

· Manage ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP devices, and other respiratory equipment used by residents.

· Adjust oxygen delivery systems to maintain safe and appropriate levels.

· Respond to respiratory emergencies and support rapid response efforts.

Resident Support & Education

· Educate residents, families, and staff on respiratory conditions, equipment use, and trach care when appropriate.

· Promote resident comfort, safety, and dignity during all interventions.

Collaboration & Communication

· Coordinate with nursing staff, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members to support individualized care plans.

· Communicate changes in respiratory status promptly and clearly.

· Participate in care discussions when present and available.

Equipment & Compliance

· Ensure proper cleaning, maintenance, and safe operation of respiratory equipment.

· Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with facility, state, and federal regulations.

· Follow all infection control protocols, including those specific to tracheostomy and ventilator care.

Qualifications

· Licensed Respiratory Therapist (LRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) in the state of practice.

· Experience in long-term care, subacute rehab, or acute care preferred.

· Strong competency in tracheostomy care and ventilator management.

· Ability to work independently and adapt to varying resident needs.

· Excellent communication, assessment, and critical-thinking skills.

Work Expectations

· PRN/as-needed schedule based on facility staffing needs.

· Ability to respond to short-notice requests when possible.

· Work may include weekends, evenings, or holidays depending on resident needs.

· Must be able to travel between Montgomery and Shelby Ridge location.
