Job Description:

Job Summary: The RN – Forensic Examiner is responsible for the delivery of quality patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation and evaluation to public or legal proceedings and the application of forensic health care in the scientific investigation of trauma and/or death related to abuse, violence, criminal activity, liability or accidents. This job coordinates with physicians and nursing staff as well as specialty teams of service in the Main ED and throughout the JPS Health Network and community to provide the highest standard of forensic health care. The RN – Forensic Examiner also assists with the day to day operation of the Forensic Nursing Services Department.

Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities:

Collaborates with the Team Lead to manage flow throughout the designated area of the ED to ensure forensic patients are expeditiously seen and/or moved into the treatment area and wait time minimized.

Coordinates care by assisting the forensic patient with referrals for appropriate medical, psychological, advocacy and legal follow up as well as accepting referrals throughout the network and from outside agencies scheduling of forensic health care appointments.

Consults and coordinates with health care team members throughout the network to provide comprehensive care and education of this patient population and staff.

Assess for mandatory reporting status, report when appropriate and assist nursing/medical staff with education regarding reporting guidelines.

Complete and document a medical legal history precisely and accurately in a timely manner while maintaining compassion and confidentiality.

Utilizing the nursing process perform a complete and detailed physical evaluation using a trauma informed approach as well as collecting evidence and photographing injuries as indicated while maintaining chain of custody and following all departmental, state and national guidelines.

Delivers nursing care to assigned group of patients to include education directed towards identified knowledge deficits, disease processes, treatment, pain management, medication administration and discharge/ safety planning while providing emotional support to patients and family members.

Interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests to assist attending provider in identifying proper plan of care.

Maintain professional standards that do not create conflict of interests with employment or patient care while ensuring patient/medical record confidentiality at all times.

Testify as a fact witness to any/all cases performed as an expert in the field of forensic nursing.

Qualifications:


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • 3 plus years of nursing experience in Critical Care, Trauma Services, Emergency Department or prior SANE experience.
  • Current licensure by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas or proof of reciprocity of licensure between the State of Texas and another state.
  • Current JPS recognized Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Completes Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Life Support (PALS) within 90 days of hire date and maintains credentialing throughout employment.
  • Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire date and maintains credentialing throughout employment.
  • Completion of Texas Attorney General or IAFN approved SANE training course upon hire date and certification within 6 months of course completion date.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • State of Texas or International Forensic Nurse approved training course or certification
  • Experience practicing as a SANE in the care of the sexually abused patient.
  • 1 year leadership experience
  • SANE-A International Association of Forensic Nurse Certification
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN)
  • Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN)
