RN/Cardiac Device Specialist - Cardiology Electrophysiology

Position Summary: The Cardiac Device Specialist provides direct care to patients with pacemakers and defibrillators, including patient education and independent device interrogations. This role collaborates with the care team to support optimal outcomes, works at multiple sites as needed, handles confidential patient information, and makes independent and collaborative decisions under the supervision of the clinical team leader and clinic manager.

Required Educational Degree: Associate’s Degree
Major/Area of Concentration: Nursing/ Healthcare/Science
Preferred Education: Bachelor’s Degree
Required Certifications, Credentials and Licenses: RN - Registered Nurse with Current Ohio License.
Cardiac Rhythm Management Certification, or Bachelor's degree. De-escalation training within 6
months.
Preferred Certifications, Credentials and Licenses: ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Required Experience: 3-5 years’ experience conducting device interrogations

Job Specific Essential Functions

  • Performs inpatient and outpatient pacemaker and implantable defibrillator (ICD) evaluations. This involves interviewing the patient concerning medications and cardiac symptoms related to device function; evaluating device function by determining capture and sensing thresholds supplying the patient with educational information and instructions concerning the device’s expected behavior; completing follow-up evaluations; and scheduling diagnostic procedures and physician referrals at the direction of the supervising physician.
  • Coordinates trans telephonic device remote monitoring. This entails instructing the patient on transmitter use; contacting the patient by phone to receive the transmission during the designated month; review of the transmission data for appropriate device function; and submission of the report to the supervising physician for review.
  • Coordinates inpatient and outpatient device evaluation / consults. This entails obtaining referring physician information; patient device history; description of reason for referral; and determination of the acuity of the consultation.
  • Updates device clinic computer database. This involves entry of patient and device system information including implant data, device ERT parameters, and generator / lead recalls and alerts.
  • Primary contact person for patient calls / questions related to their device. Appropriate triage of patients in consultation with the supervising physician.
  • Development and distribution of device-related educational materials for patients and their families during the pre and post-operative phases of device implantation.
  • Works with the manufacturer to assure devices/implants being replaced due to a recall, defect, or mechanical complication is being provided to Adena at no cost and there is no subsequent charge to the patient/patient’s insurance.
