Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This Road Engineer Associate (EA III) position is located in Lawrence, KS, and is within the Bureau of Road Design.

This person is primarily designer for a variety of highway improvement projects. They are responsible for designing and managing multiple projects including the most complex. They are responsible for reviewing and coordinating the development of plans by consultant. They are charged with the responsibility of developing meaningful and challenging assignments for technical assistants to meet schedule and program goals.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops concepts for improvement which address the needs of the highway user. Prepares engineering and environmental evaluations for projects ranging widely in complexity. Evaluations consider a broad range of influences including geometric, hydraulic, as well as environmental issues. Items such as access control, right of way considerations, engineering criteria, constructability, traffic accommodation and other factors affect the decisions. Some level of public involvement will be required. Presentations of project details at public hearings and informational meetings may be required.
  • Performs the calculations necessary to accurately locate a highway and provide adequate information for its construction. This will include calculations of highway and street grades, elevations and horizontal alignment data. Determine lengths of drainage structures using knowledge of the cross-sectional features of the roadway. Computes quantity of all items required for construction and assembles them in a proper bid item sequence for construction letting.
  • Provides work assignments for those engineers or engineering technicians who are assisting with the design of projects.
  • Prepares detailed drawings of special drainage structures and layouts of complicated intersections and interchanges using both conventional methods and Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD).
  • Plans and organizes personal duties and those of assistants to complete the project in an efficient manner. Oversees consultant plan development for timely completion of activities. Requires knowledge of project plan production procedures, from an agency standpoint, and that activities be coordinated with other bureaus so that the agency’s goals and objectives can be met.
  • Trains less experienced engineers and technicians in office procedures and design practices needed to produce or effectively review a set of contract plans.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years direct experience in road design or a related field.
  • Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering certificate (Engineer in Training Certificate)
  • Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Professional Engineering License is desirable but not required
