Job Description:

Join the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Roadway Design team and help shape the future of the State of Nebraska's transportation infrastructure! You’ll get the opportunity to lead the design for a variety of projects from maintenance to new construction, all while working with a multi-disciplinary team from environmental, to construction, to local entities. You will gain valuable experience learning how NDOT takes projects from concept to construction and learn leadership skills that will help you to grow as a professional and move forward as a leader at NDOT.

Pay range is $35.641 -$52.539 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.

If unable to fill at the Professional Engineer I level, will consider applicants at the Engineer level which requires a bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment. Pay rate for this classification is $31.265 per hour.


Job Duties:

  • Lead and participate in the design of various complex rural and municipal roadway construction projects including resurfacing and reconstruction projects.
  • Manage one or more Engineers and/or Highway Designers, overseeing project assignments and handling personnel issues including performance evaluations.
  • Coordinate several roadway design projects concurrently within the Division including projects assigned to this position to handle design responsibilities.
  • Manage/assist direct reports as well as complete all tasks necessary to design a project from inception to letting such as alignments, drainage, guardrail, quantities and other design-related tasks.
  • Review work completed by direct reports including drainage calculations, quantity calculations, various project-related documentation, and preliminary/final plans for conformance to standards, completeness and constructability.
  • Schedule and conduct meetings such as Plan-In-Hands, Project Coordination Meetings and other meetings necessary to complete the design of projects to ensure projects meet construction standards and agency policies.
  • Perform data collection, background research, note reduction, calculations, analysis and documentation of engineering related decisions.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the direct supervisor (Unit Head) or the Section Head, such as reviewing plans from consultants or permits requiring design review.


Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Engineer: Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment.

Professional Engineer I: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at the time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering with focus on transportation.
  • Experience in the design of highways, streets, culverts and storm sewers.
  • Experience with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, ProjectWise and AASHTOWare, or similar design related software.
  • Experience in the preparation of highway construction plans and construction estimating.

Other:

  • Engineering degrees must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program (or evaluated by NCEES as equivalent).
  • Requires occasional out-of-town overnight travel.
  • Valid driver's license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation is required.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in the most current version of at least one CADD software platform (MicroStation, AutoCAD, etc.) and able to assist direct reports and others in the use of the tools.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of AASHTO's - A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, NDOT's Roadway Design Manual, and Standard Specifications for Highway Construction and communicate the policies/standards to direct reports for completion of the design of highway projects.
  • Strong organizational, public relations, and verbal and written communication skills.
