General Statement of Job
The Boca Raton Public Library empowers our community to discover, connect, and create through quality collections and resources, information assistance, educational programs, and lifelong learning opportunities. The Boca Raton Library has four service centers – the Spanish River Library, the Downtown Library, Mobile Library Services, and the Digital Library.
Under the direction of a Library Assistant II Lead Worker, a Library Assistant III, or a Librarian II, part time Librarian Assistant II positions are responsible for general functions of the library, which may include accounts, information, or library material assistance at the public desks, adult instruction, youth programs, or library promotion, outreach and events.
Essential Functions
Account Services Section
- Accurately performs circulation functions including creating and updating library cards, placing and finding holds, checking materials out or in, collecting fines or fees, an preserving account confidentiality, in person, by email and on the phone.
- Effectively uses email, phones, computers and printers, library software and calendars, cash registers, credit card machines, calculators, and library self-checks and scanners.
- Assesses the condition of returned library materials and addresses damage with cardholders according to procedure.
- Assists with offsite library materials pickup and delivery.
- Interacts helpfully with patrons to assist them in obtaining a library card and using library materials and services.
- Assists with library-wide events, offers reading recommendations, and maintains displays.
- Enforces the Rules of Conduct, library policies, and maintains order at the libraries.
- Does related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Library principles, methods, materials, and practices.
- Reader interests, books, and authors.
- Objectives of a public library.
- How the library is organized, including services, sections, shelves, aisles, and other library spaces.
- Basic mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including counting money and tracking number of uses.
- Reading and alphabetizing accurately to place materials in their proper order.
- Evaluating tasks and priorities to complete work accurately and efficiently.
- Significant skills in customer service.
- Significant skills in the use of email, cell phones, computers, software applications such as Outlook, peripheral devices such as printers, and searching in a library catalog, a database or the Internet.
- Accurately sort and file materials alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically.
- Accurately shelve using the Dewey Decimal System and other organizational methods.
- Carefully handle library materials, using appropriate tools, containers and book carts.
- Assist patrons to locate materials and refer patrons to other appropriate assistance in the library.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with patrons, partners, and co-workers.
- Serve the public and interact with co-workers with honesty and integrity, addressing difficult situations with professional composure.
- Understand, follow, and explain policies and procedures, submit forms, and demonstrate steps using technology.
- Speak effectively and in a friendly manner to patrons at the front desk, on the phone, and during card signups, classes, presentations, or library events.
- Ability to express ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work mornings, days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as necessary.
- Bend, stoop, twist, and reach to shelve or move a variety of library materials.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

- An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent (60 college or university credits).
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Experience working with cash registers, computers, or other technology to assist customers at a front desk, or experience developing or presenting a class, program, or instruction preferred.
- One (1) year experience working with the public. Experience working in libraries, bookstores, educational or cultural organizations preferred.
Additional experience is accepted as a minimum requirement in lieu of the postsecondary degree on the following basis: additional four (4) years in lieu of the bachelor’s degree, and additional two (2) years in lieu of an associate degree.

Physical and Environmental Demands and Conditions

- Occasionally working in an outdoor area where exposure to animals, reptiles, and/or insects may occur.
- Occasionally working with equipment or performing procedures where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, or muscle pulls.
- Constantly moving about within the immediate work area to accomplish tasks.
- Constantly adjusting or moving objects up to 20 pounds in all directions.
- Constantly communicating with others to exchange information.
- Constantly repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Constantly operating a computer and other equipment using motions requiring manual dexterity or fine motor skills.
- Constantly assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
- Constantly observing details accurately and identifying variances.
- Constantly lifting/carrying objects 40 pounds or less.
- Constantly demonstrating regular in office and/or on-site attendance without eligibility for remote work assignment.
Essential Employee Designation
When normal operations of City departments are suspended or interrupted due to a declaration that a state of emergency exists, any employee may be deemed essential by the City. For the preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail, employees deemed necessary shall be required to work.
