A successful candidate will have motivated attitude and who is driven by productivity, will have an academic and/or employment record that indicates a strong work ethic. A wide range of applicants with multidisciplinary backgrounds will be considered and basic knowledge in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, engineering and/or a combination of related educational studies and work experience is preferred. Practical knowledge of laboratory procedures and the ability to conduct laboratory experiments with integrity, rigor and documentation.

Preferred Qualifications:
Wet lab bench work experience with attention to detail. Experience working with a genetic model organism. Media and solution making, and familiarity with biochemical and/or engineering approaches. The preferred candidate will have some knowledge of the specific use of the Drosophila genetic model system.

The purpose of this position is to support a Drosophila cryopreservation project. This research is focused on developing a robust protocol for the long-term archiving of Drosophila mutant strains. The work will include significant fly husbandry and embryo manipulations to optimize the protocol steps with the goal of providing a straightforward method for Drosophila laboratories to archive their fly strains. The position will also provide support for a DNA sequencing aspect of the project to assess whether cryopreservation is mutagenic. Research will involve molecular and biochemical work, fly genetics, fly husbandry, and optical imaging. The researcher will work closely with the lead research scientist that manages the project personnel on a daily basis. The researcher will engage other collaborators to advance the project but will be expected to carry out experiments and analyses independently. Additional activities include lab maintenance duties, ordering supplies, and making solutions.

Essential Functions:
75%- Experimentation: To carefully and precisely conduct laboratory experiments using established laboratory techniques and protocols. The execution of procedures will leverage a good knowledge of basic cellular and molecular biology, engineering, as well as genetics. This background would facilitate lab activities including, accurate solution making, precise timing of protocol steps, genetic manipulation of Drosophila strains, as well as understanding and executing established analytical methods to analyze proteins and DNA derived from Drosophila. The researcher will be expected to maintain experimental records and document laboratory methods. Read current scientific literature; adapt published methods for use in this laboratory. Organize results and prepare figures to present results to supervisor and at group meetings.

25% - Lab Management: Manage scheduling and some training of undergraduate student workers. Assist with hiring and supervision of undergraduate student workers. Assist with orientation of new laboratory members. Order equipment and supplies for the lab and maintain records thereof. Organize chemical and biological reagent stocks, including Drosophila stocks. Assist in general husbandry of Drosophila stocks and fly food preparation as needed. Maintain records of reagent stocks shared with and received from other labs. Maintain laboratory safety practices and records in accordance with university requirements.
