Summary

The Specialty Runner plays a critical role in the efficient operation of a restaurant by delivering food and beverages to guests in a timely, professional manner. This position focuses on a specific area of the restaurant s offerings, such as fine dining, specialty cocktails, or specific types of cuisine, ensuring that guests receive their orders promptly and with attention to detail. The Specialty Runner assists in managing special requests, ensuring food quality and presentation, and supporting the front-of-house team to deliver an exceptional dining experience.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the timely delivery of food and beverages to guests, following the correct order and ensuring proper presentation.
  • Pay close attention to specialty items, ensuring that dishes are served as per the guest's order, including correct garnishes, sauces, or side items.
  • Assist in the preparation of any special requests, such as dietary preferences or modifications, and ensure they are correctly communicated to the kitchen or bar.
  • Communicate effectively with the front-of-house team, including servers and managers, to ensure smooth order flow and proper timing of food and beverage delivery.
  • Maintain a good understanding of the restaurant s specialized offerings, such as unique menu items, specialty cocktails, or high-end ingredients.
  • Be able to describe the ingredients and preparation methods of specialty dishes or beverages when necessary, providing information to customers if requested.
  • Ensure that each dish and drink is delivered in accordance with the restaurant's standards of quality and presentation.
  • Support the front-of-house associates by assisting with clearing plates, refilling water glasses, or attending to customer requests between courses.
  • Assist with keeping the dining area clean, including clearing empty plates, glasses, and silverware after guests have finished their meal.
  • Ensure that service stations, kitchen doors, and beverage areas remain organized and clean.
  • Monitor the dining area for any additional needs, such as replenishing condiments or napkins for guests.
  • Assist with setting up and preparing for service, including organizing plates, utensils, and garnishes for easy access.
  • Perform any other duties or responsibilities as assigned by management to support the effective operation of the department and the broader goals of the property.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Previous experience in a food service or restaurant role (e.g., runner, busser, server) is preferred.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Good knowledge of food and beverage items, especially specialty dishes or drinks served by the restaurant.
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to lift trays of food and beverages and carry them across the dining area (up to 30-50 pounds).
  • Ability to remain calm and efficient, even during peak service times.
  • A positive, proactive attitude with a focus on customer satisfaction.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to carry heavy trays, plates, or food items.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and reach to clean tables or arrange items.

This role may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the establishment s hours of operation.
