SAFETY AND PROTECTIVE SERVICES ASSISTANT

The Dayton Metro Library is seeking a full-time Safety and Protective Services Assistant who will be based at our Main Library in downtown Dayton. The Safety and Protective Services Assistant reports to our Safety and Protective Services Director and will assist with such things as creating ID badges and configuring building access accordingly, coordinating security plans for each location, assigning keys to staff members as requested, and providing clerical support. The successful candidate will also represent the Library in court by providing testimony as needed in relevant court proceedings. The ideal applicant will have experience in the security field and possess knowledge of security protocols and strong organizational skills. Essential Job Duties

  • Represents the Library in court and testifies in hearings involving the Dayton Metro Library.
  • Works to identify individuals who may have committed security breaches or violations; reports concerns to the Safety and Protective Services Director. Gathers evidence and assists with staff and patron investigations, as directed.
  • Assists with the coordination of security plans, provides temporary access to Library facilities, and schedules Safety and Protective Services Officers for before and after-hours events.
  • Creates access ID badges for all staff.
  • Issues keys and organizes the key control system.
  • Assigns, programs, and deactivates alarm codes for Library employees, as needed.
  • Creates and distributes parking permits for managers, Main Library employees, and Operations Center staff.
  • Coordinates security and safety training for Library employees. Coordinates public programs that promote cooperation and understanding between local law enforcement and community members.
  • Schedules emergency evacuation drills in accordance with prescribed timelines.
  • Maintains and disposes of lost and found items in accordance with Library policy.
  • Provides clerical support, including record keeping. Supports responses to Freedom of Information requests.
  • Assists with the operation of alarm systems including burglar alarm systems, access control systems, panic alarm systems, digital video cameras and servers, and fire alarm systems at all locations. Serves as secondary contact for all alarm systems.

Job Qualifications

  • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of security protocols and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and comprehend instruction manuals, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively when addressing individuals and during court proceedings.
  • Ability to apply active listening skills.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of records.
  • Ability to learn new software programs and technologies used in carrying out job duties.
  • Ability to use word processing software and e-mail required.
  • Ability to deal effectively with confrontational individuals and/or challenging situations.

Physical Requirements: Ability to periodically drive. Ability to frequently walk, carry, hold, reach, turn, and stand. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. Ability to speak and hear required.

Transportation: Valid driver’s license, acceptable motor vehicle record, and continuous insurability required for driving own vehicle for Library-related obligations OR has access to reliable and efficient* transportation. (*Definition of efficient is that employee can travel to and from required work obligations within Google Maps’ specified timeframe.)


Compensation and Benefits: Starting hourly rate for this position is $22.10. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance along with paid time off and OPERS retirement. This position is open until filled.
