Safety and Security Section Head

Position Summary:


The Safety and Security Section Head is responsible for overseeing all aspects of safety and security within the museum, including security, HSE, emergency preparedness, and compliance frameworks to protect people, artworks, and assets. The Section Head works closely with museum leadership and external agencies to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all, and ensures operational readiness for exhibitions, events, and public programs through technical and logistical coordination.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Develop, implement, and regularly update safety and security policies and procedures in accordance with best practices and legal requirements.
  • Supervise, train, and schedule security personnel, ensuring continuous coverage and readiness for emergencies.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness and response plans, including evacuation drills, incident reporting, and crisis management.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and security audits throughout the museum premises.
  • Develop, maintain, and socialize risk management plans for exhibitions, events, public programs, and day-to-day operations, including escalation and business continuity arrangements.
  • Oversee the installation, operation, and maintenance of security systems such as surveillance cameras, alarms, and access controls.
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency services as needed.
  • Monitor visitor flow and enforce museum policies to prevent theft, vandalism, and accidents.
  • Prepare and manage the safety and security budget, including procurement of equipment and supplies.
  • Investigate and document incidents, accidents, or breaches, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Promote a culture of safety and security awareness among staff, volunteers, and visitors through training and outreach.


Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, safety, security management, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in security, safety, or facility management, preferably in a museum, cultural institution, or similar environment.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of emergency procedures, security technology, and relevant laws/regulations.
  • Effective communication, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to remain calm and decisive in stressful situations.
  • First Aid/CPR certification and emergency response training are preferred.


Working Conditions:


This position may require evening, weekend, or holiday hours and the ability to respond to emergencies outside of regular working hours. The Safety and Security Section Head must be able to patrol museum premises and respond quickly to incidents as needed.
