Position Overview
The Safety Specialist serves as a system focused role responsible for documentation, verification, and consistency within Tank Builders, helping implement, reinforce, and monitor safe work practices across field, shop, and operational environments. This position reports directly to the Safety Director and ensures execution aligns with company expectations and is properly documented through training coordination, inspections, documentation, compliance monitoring, and day-to-day safety.
The Safety Specialist ensures adherence to Tank Builders’ company standards – including safety, integrity, collaboration, and accountability – and works closely with Human Resources, Project Management, Operations, and the Safety Director for a safe, compliant, and efficient project execution. This role is intended to be hands-on and visible, strengthen Tank Builders’ proactive safety culture through consistent engagement, follow-up, and support.

Key Responsibilities
Safety Program Support & Field Presence
- Support the Safety Director in implementing and reinforcing Tank Builders’ safety policies, procedures, and expectations across field and shop operations.
- Maintain an active presence in the field and shop to observe work practices, identify potential hazards, and drive safe behaviors.
- Conduct routine jobsite visits, field observations, safety inspections, and follow-up reviews to verify compliance and completion of corrective actions.
- Drive Tank Builders’ zero-recordable safety culture through consistent communication, coaching, and visible engagement with employees at all levels.
- Support field personnel and supervisors with day-to-day safety questions, documentation needs, and interpretation of company safety expectations.
- Drive employee participation in hazard recognition, near-miss reporting, and proactive safety involvement.
Safety Compliance
- Support compliance with all company safety policies and applicable OSHA, AWWA, API, EPA, and customer-specific safety requirements.
- Review safety documentation, including daily reports, JSAs, toolbox meetings, inspection forms, incident documentation, and corrective action logs.
- Track safety-related records to ensure documentation is complete, accurate, timely, and properly maintained.
- Prepare documentation required for audits, contractor prequalification, customer requests, and internal safety reviews.
- Support the Safety Director in maintaining organized and current safety files, training records, SDS information, and required compliance documentation.
- Track open safety items to help ensure timely completion and proper closeout.
- Ensure all required documentation is complete, accurate, and submitted on time with the philosophy that if it’s not documented, it didn’t happen.
Training & Employee Support
- Coordination and delivery of safety orientations, toolbox talks, refresher training, and other safety-related communication initiatives.
- Support the Safety Director in identifying training needs based on incidents, observations, audit findings, trends, and operational changes.
- Drive safe work practices related to welding, rigging, fall protection, scaffold use, confined space awareness, equipment operation, housekeeping, and general construction safety.
- Partner with supervisors and field leadership to help ensure crews understand and follow project-specific safety requirements.
- Conduct onboarding efforts by helping ensure new hires complete required safety forms, acknowledgements, and introductory training.
- Communicate safety expectations clearly and professionally while encouraging understanding and accountability.
Incident Response & Corrective Action Support
- Maintain reporting, documentation, and follow-up of incidents, near misses, first aid cases, property damage events, and other safety concerns.
- Participate/Drive incident investigations as directed by the Safety Director, including gathering facts, photographs, witness statements, and related documentation.
- Identify contributing factors, track corrective actions, and support implementation of practical preventive measures.
- Monitor recurring issues and communicate trends or concerns to the Safety Director and appropriate leadership personnel.
- Share lessons-learned communication so key takeaways are shared and reinforced across the organization.
Inspections, Audits & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain and conduct internal safety audits, jobsite evaluations, equipment inspections, and facility walkthroughs.
- Identify trends, recurring deficiencies, and opportunities for improvement within field and shop operations.
- Drive continuous improvement efforts by working with the Safety Director and operations leadership to strengthen procedures, consistency, and accountability.
- Create review and improvement of safety forms, checklists, reporting tools, and standard practices as needed.
- Ensure safety observations and audit findings are communicated constructively and followed through to resolution.
Communication & Collaboration
- Maintain effective communication and working relationships with the Safety Director, field leadership, Project Managers, shop personnel, and office staff.
- Foster a “One Team / One TBI” culture by promoting clear communication, mutual respect, and shared responsibility for safety performance.
- Communicate professionally and constructively when addressing unsafe conditions, documentation gaps, or policy expectations.
- Coordinate between departments to help ensure safety expectations are understood and consistently applied.
- Represent Tank Builders in a professional and positive manner at all times, promoting company values, reliability, and accountability.
Other Duties
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by Management to support the safety, operational, and business objectives of Tank Builders.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of relevant safety experience in construction, industrial, manufacturing, or related environments; heavy industrial or aboveground storage tank experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of OSHA standards and general construction safety practices required.
- Familiarity with AWWA, API 650/653, EPA, and customer-specific safety expectations is preferred.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records, follow up on open items, and manage multiple priorities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with field and office personnel.
- Demonstrated ability to observe work conditions, identify hazards, and communicate corrective actions clearly and respectfully.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred, but not required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and related safety documentation systems.
- Ability to travel to project sites as required.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company and customer access requirements.
- OSHA 30 certification preferred; additional safety certifications are a plus.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
