The Sales Consultant Trainee program is designed to provide hands-on experience and structured training to individuals who are looking to build a career in automotive sales. This position is an entry-level opportunity for individuals with a strong customer service mindset who are eager to develop their skills and grow within Thompsons Auto Group.

Position Summary

The Sales Consultant Trainee supports the Sales Team in learning all aspects of the vehicle sales process, from customer engagement to closing deals. This program focuses on developing product knowledge, customer service skills, and sales techniques in a structured and supportive environment. Trainees will receive ongoing mentorship and training to prepare them for a full-time Sales Consultant position.

Key Responsibilities

Training & Development

  • Participate in structured training programs covering product knowledge, customer engagement, dealership processes, and sales techniques.
  • Shadow experienced Sales Consultants to learn best practices for customer interactions, vehicle demonstrations, and the sales process.
  • Complete training modules related to CRM systems, finance and insurance (F&I) options, and dealership software.

Customer Engagement & Support

  • Greet customers warmly, assist with inquiries, and create a welcoming, informative showroom experience.
  • Observe and assist with needs assessments to understand customer preferences and guide them to suitable vehicles.
  • Learn to conduct vehicle demonstrations and accompany customers on test drives to explain features and answer questions.
  • Assist in maintaining customer relationships by following up with leads, inquiries, and past customers.

Sales Process Support

  • Learn and assist with trade-in evaluations, financing options, and vehicle pricing discussions.
  • Ensure customer information is accurate and complete before submission to Finance.
  • Support the Sales Team by preparing necessary documentation and updating the dealership’s CRM system.
  • Assist with pre-delivery activities, including reviewing owner’s manuals, setting customer preferences, and conducting AIM accessory presentations.

Dealership & Inventory Management

  • Maintain a clean and organized showroom to enhance the customer experience.
  • Gain experience in managing vehicle inventory, ensuring cars are properly displayed, fueled, and ready for test drives.
  • Assist with dealership events and promotions to generate customer engagement and sales opportunities.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in business, marketing, or a related field is a plus.
  • Prior experience in customer service, retail, or hospitality is preferred but not required.
  • A passion for sales, customer service, and the automotive industry.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build rapport and connect with customers.
  • Enthusiastic and coachable with a willingness to learn and take direction.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask effectively.
  • Basic computer proficiency and willingness to learn dealership software and CRM tools.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
