CUSTODIAL SERVICES ASSISTANT
UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER
(This is not a State/University Position)
SUMMARY: The Custodial Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of the custodial team by maintaining clean and safe facilities, assisting with inventory management, and providing support in the absence of supervisory staff. Duties and responsibilities listed below are not all inclusive and other duties may be assigned. This position reports directly to the SC Facility Services Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Custodial Responsibilities:
  • Performs all related custodial duties to include but not limited to: cleans conference rooms, restrooms, kitchens, dining areas, offices, and related facilities; sweeps, mops, scrubs, and polishes concrete, vinyl tile and wood floors; vacuums and shampoos mats, rugs, and carpets; dusts furniture; empties and cleans trash receptacles; cleans walls, furniture, windows, woodwork, dry erase boards, lockers, and other equipment; cleans doors, window glass, and drinking fountains; washes, scrubs, and disinfects restrooms.
  • Monitors custodial inventory and compiles a list of needed supplies, submitting it to the SC Custodial Services Coordinator for ordering through the custodial supply vendor.
  • Coordinates the custodial services of the building, ensuring all restrooms, conference spaces, and common areas are cleaned and maintained.
  • Receives deliveries and verifies all items are accounted for. Ensures all supplies are stored properly in accordance with OSHA and appropriate documentation.
  • Conducts regular walk-throughs of the University Student Center and the Events Center to make sure staff are cleaning to established standards.
  • Ensures removal of trash and debris from external landscape and flower beds within the SC designated perimeter.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with the Custodial Services Coordinator to oversee SC Student Custodians by scheduling staff, and delegating tasks during assigned shifts.
  • Leads and monitors workflow for assigned shifts and provides support during absences of the SC Custodial Services Coordinator.
Compliance & Safety:
  • Assists with the investigation and reports all custodial employee accidents or injuries on the job, recommends corrective actions as needed.
  • Reports maintenance needs or safety hazards to the appropriate personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred – not required.
  • One year of full-time experience in custodial services (Part Time service considered - 2:1 ratio).
  • Demonstrated experience with staff supervision and training programs is necessary.
  • Proven success in working with students, faculty, and staff, and reasonable experience and demonstrated capability in working with diverse student populations.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries as well as explain, interprets, and applies a variety of policies and procedures.
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Office.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Sit for extended periods; frequently standing and walking; normal manual dexterity (hands and fingers) and eye-hand coordination; lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving objects weighing up to 30 lbs.; bending, kneeling, stooping and crouching; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; and use of custodial equipment and cleaning supplies; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, copiers.
Work is performed in an office environment and throughout the campus areas during student programs; continuous contact with other staff, students, faculty, and the public.
This position may work evenings and weekends depending on business needs. Work week will typically be Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. Hours may vary.
