BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the designated supervisor, the Scale House Attendant is responsible for performing administrative functions, including entering scale data into the computer, collecting fees, compiling reports, and answering phones. They conduct initial material screening, identify special and banned wastes, and understand and enforce rules and policies. This position provides support to ancillary services, such as the Small Loads Area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Identifies residential, recycling, commercial and industrial waste categories, verifying solid and special waste authorizations and codes the materials appropriately in waste works.
  • Directs landfill customers to the appropriate areas.
  • Collect fees and issue receipts using a computer.
  • Reconcile cash and receipts daily.
  • Prepare reports and maintain necessary records.
  • Answer and provide information regarding landfill hours, load requirements, fees, etc.
  • Adheres to all established safety rules.
  • Enforce Commission policies and procedures and other regulatory requirements
  • Notifies management of recurring issues.
  • Respond to emergencies, including hot loads, equipment failures, storms, and other operational disruptions as needed.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties to maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the office, such as sweeping, dusting and taking out trash.
  • Establish and maintain constructive and effective working relationships with Commission employees and the public.
  • Performs assigned work as required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must possess excellent customer service skills.
  • An ability to effectively explain regulations, guidelines, and management practices to the public.
  • Ability to learn and follow operating procedures.
  • Ability to do basic computer work.
  • Ability to receive money, make change, and keep simple records.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and accident prevention practices.
  • Ability to detect unsafe or hazardous conditions of equipment and work environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work around offensive sights, odor, noise, and dirty environmental conditions.
  • Must be capable of working in adverse weather, i.e. rain, cold and hot temperatures, sleet and snow.
  • Establish and maintain constructive and effective working relationships with Commission employees and landfill users.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two years related customer service experience involving cash and charge account transactions.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES

  • Must have a driver's license valid in the State of Iowa and be insured under the Commission guidelines.
  • Obtain Iowa Landfill Operator’s Certification within the first 6 months of employment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, hear, use hands and fingers, feel, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and reach with hands and arms. In addition, the employee must frequently lift and move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Ability to identify trucks, heavy equipment, and signage at varying distances to ensure safe and efficient operations. Ability to read and interpret printed and electronic information such as safety labels and operational instructions. Ability to monitor surroundings for hazards and moving vehicles during work activities.

Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour
