Job Description




Purpose of the Job:


The School Nurse will be responsible for providing healthcare services to the students and staff at Good Shepherd International School. This role involves ensuring a healthy school environment through preventative care, health education, and prompt medical attention. The nurse will collaborate with the Resident Medical Officer and other staff to monitor and address health-related issues within the school community.


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Healthcare Delivery:


    • Provide day-to-day nursing care in the school hospital under the direction of the Resident Medical Officer.


    • Administer basic healthcare and first aid to ill, medically fragile, and/or injured students and staff.


    • Monitor and document vital signs, administer medications (including intramuscular, intravenous, and intracutaneous injections), and manage IV fluids and cannulas.


    • Develop and implement individualized health plans for students with specific medical needs.


    • Plan and implement school health protocols and procedures, particularly for emergency situations.


    • Conduct health assessments and screenings, including vision, growth and development check ups.


  • Health Counseling:


    • Provide ongoing health counseling to students, parents, and staff on various health-related topics.


    • Promote wellness among students and staff through preventive healthcare services, such as immunizations.


  • Collaboration & Communication:


    • Collaborate with parents, students, resident medical officers, and external consultants to promote necessary treatment and comply with legal and medical requirements.


    • Chaperone students and staff to medical consultations outside the school campus as required.


    • Maintain open communication with the Resident Medical Officer and school administration regarding the health status of students and staff.


    • Attend school meetings and participate in-service training sessions.


  • Documentation & Compliance:


    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date health records, including immunization records, health care plans, and medical emergency cards.


    • Prepare and submit reports on student health activities, compliance with district and state health regulations, and other relevant matters.


    • Report cases of suspected child abuse and students with reportable contagious diseases to the resident medical officer.


    • Ensure compliance with medical laws and school policies regarding student medications and health services.


Skills Required:

  • Proficient in nursing and medical skills, including the ability to monitor vital signs, administer injections, and handle emergency situations independently.


  • Knowledge of emergency medications and CPR procedures.


  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with students, parents, and staff.


  • Meticulous attention to detail and a compassionate, empathetic bedside manner.


  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and email tasks).


Qualifications Required:

  • Minimum qualification of General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM). Preferred B.Sc. in Nursing


  • More than 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in a boarding school or a hospital environment.


  • Registration Certificate from the concerned Nursing Council.


Working Hours:

  • The position requires flexibility, including working evenings, overnights, weekends, and during school holidays, trips, and expeditions.


  • The nurse will work 6 days per week, including Saturdays and Sundays when necessary.


  • Days off will be weekly once, flexible and determined in consultation with the Resident Medical Officer.


  • Participation in all aspects of school life, including pastoral care and the extra-curricular program, is expected. No additional payment or time off in lieu will be provided for overnight trips, as these are inherent aspects of the nursing role in a residential school.


Working Conditions:

  • Environment: Office and outdoor environments with minimal temperature variations.


  • Physical Demands: Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; hearing and speaking to exchange information; visual acuity; significant fine finger dexterity.


  • Hazards: Exposure to blood and body fluids.

  • Candidates must demonstrate energy and enthusiasm in participating in the life of a busy residential school and must be prepared to take on residential responsibilities as part of their role


  • Note: The employee will be provided single occupancy within the campus .
