DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a talented School to Work - Engineering student to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in Troy, MI .
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
You’ll support engineers in developing cutting-edge mechatronic systems and mechanical components, directly contributing to the evolution of Cummins-Meritor products.
By assisting in vehicle and lab-based R&D testing, you’ll help validate new designs and technologies, ensuring they meet performance and safety standards.
Your work analyzing sensor data will help uncover performance trends and inform engineering decisions, bridging the gap between raw data and actionable insights.
Through clearance studies and CAD modeling, you’ll help refine component designs for better fit, function, and manufacturability.
Writing code in C/C++, MATLAB, or Python will allow you to automate tasks, simulate systems, and support data analysis—enhancing engineering efficiency.
Your engineering reports will communicate findings and recommendations, contributing to knowledge sharing and informed decision-making across teams.
By assisting in product benchmarking, you’ll help identify strengths and opportunities for improvement in Cummins-Meritor’s offerings.
Your involvement in FEA and dynamic modeling will aid in predicting product behavior under real-world conditions, reducing development time and cost.
RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
Apply your academic knowledge in mechanical, mechatronics, or electrical engineering to real-world problems, especially in vehicle systems like brakes, axles, and suspensions.
Be comfortable working in lab and vehicle testing environments, using tools for data acquisition, and performing physical tests to support R&D efforts.
Develop and apply coding skills in C/C++, MATLAB, or Python to automate tasks, analyze data, and support simulations or modeling.
Use 2D and 3D design tools (e.g., Pro-E or similar) to create drawings and models that support engineering change requests and design validation.
Go beyond task execution—analyze sensor data, perform clearance studies, and contribute to benchmarking and simulation efforts with a critical eye.
Write engineering reports, present findings, and collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams.
Work well under supervision while engaging with various departments, showing initiative and flexibility in a dynamic engineering environment.
Stay eager to learn from experienced engineers, ask questions, and seek to understand the “why” behind engineering decisions to grow professionally.
