Science Communicator, Volunteer

About the Pet Cancer Foundation

At the Pet Cancer Foundation, we’re committed to transforming the lives of pets diagnosed with cancer by improving their life expectancy and quality of life. Estimates suggest that 12 million dogs and cats develop cancer each year, roughly six times the number of humans diagnosed annually in North America. We’re growing rapidly and need detail-oriented, scientifically minded volunteers to strengthen our educational content, ensuring pet owners receive reliable, evidence-based information on pet health, wellness, and more.

About the Role

As a Volunteer Science Communicator, you’ll bridge the gap between diverse pet-related research and pet owners seeking clear, actionable information. You’ll create engaging, easy-to-understand content by distilling peer-reviewed studies on topics ranging from pet health, cancer, and wellness to the human-animal bond, psychological aspects, and human-pet cohabitation into articles and resources tailored for the public. Your specific subject matter expertise (PhD) will guide how you contribute to our mission.

Please leave a note with your application acknowledging your awareness of the volunteer nature of this position. We will only proceed with candidates who confirm their understanding.

What You’ll Do

  • Review high-quality, peer-reviewed studies across quantitative and qualitative research on pet health, wellness, and human-pet interactions to produce accurate, engaging content for pet owners.
  • Write articles, and resources at a high school reading level, ensuring clarity and alignment with PCF’s approachable tone.
  • Identify and assess credible research materials, ensuring they meet PCF’s standards for reliability and relevance.
  • Adhere to deadlines and style guidelines while producing polished, error-free content that resonates with diverse audiences.

About You

You’re a skilled communicator with a scientific background and a passion for making complex research understandable to everyone. Your ability to synthesize data and write compelling content makes you a perfect fit for this role. You bring:

  • A Ph.D. in life sciences, animal sciences, or a health-related field.
  • 6+ years of experience writing or editing science-related content, such as articles for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Proven ability to translate technical research into clear, engaging, and concise content for non-expert audiences.
  • Strong research skills to identify and evaluate credible scientific literature.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for collaboration and content creation.

· Enthusiasm for animal welfare and nonprofit work (prior nonprofit experience is a plus but not required).

Why Volunteer with Us?

This role offers a unique chance to use your expertise to empower pet owners and advance our mission to provide hope to families for the pets they love. You’ll expand your skills in science communication, grow your professional network, and make a meaningful impact on pets and their families.
